“Oomar Qaid” (1961) was produced by Super pictures and directed by Aspi Irani. This movie had Sheikh Mukhtar, Sudhir, Nazima, Helen, Mukri, Hiralal, Sulochana, Mohan Choti, Jeevankala etc in it.

Six songs from this movie have been discussed in the past.

Here is the seventh and final song from “Oomer Qaid”(1961). This song is sung by Mukesh and Suman Kalyanpur. Hasrat Jaipuri is the lyricst. Music is composed by Iqbal Qureshy.

This song is picturised as a romantic song on Sudhir and Naazima. It is an archtypical Mukesh song and a wonderful song to listen to especially at night viz. Chhaayageet time. In fact some oldtimers may have the experience of listening to such romantic songs on transistor late at night, preferably while looking at stars in clear sky. A chhaayaageet song, indeed.

With this song, “Oomer Qaid”(1961) joins the list of movies that have all their songs covered in the blog.

Song-Suno ji ek baat tum (Oomer Qaid)(1961) Singers-Mukesh, Suman Kalyanpur, Lyrics-Hasrat Jaipuri, MD-Iqbal Qureshy

Lyrics

suno ji ek baat tum
hamaara dil hua hai gum
ho ho ho
tumhaari jalwaagaah mein
madhur madhur nigaah mein
milan ki mast raah mein
suno ji ek baat tum
ho ho ho
na chhed mujhko ik nazar
kisi ki mujhko kya khabar
o o o
main apne dil ka raag hoon
main zindagi ka saaz hoon
machal gayi to aag hoon
ho ho
na chhed mujhko ik nazar
kisi ki mujhko kya khabar

kuchh to boliye
raaz kholiye
aaj se aapke
hum to ho liye
aisi baaten aur se kahiye
dhyaan kidhar hai
hosh mein rahiye

ho ho ho
suno ji ek baat tum
hamaara dil hua hai gum
ho ho ho
tumhaari jalwaagaah mein
madhur madhur nigaah mein
milan ki mast raah mein
ho ho
suno ji ek baat tum
hamaara dil hua hai gum

aap agar na humpe hanste
kaise baste pyaar ke raste
gar sataaoge dukh uthaaoge
dil mein mere rah na paaoge

ho ho ho
suno ji ek baat tum
hamaara dil hua hai gum
ho ho ho
tumhaari jalwaagaah mein
madhur madhur nigaah mein
milan ki mast raah mein
ho ho
suno ji ek baat tum
hamaara dil hua hai gum

“Pyaase Panchhi”(1960) was directed by Harsukh Bhatt for Shree Prakash films, Bombay. The movie had Ameeta, Mehmood, Jeewan, David, Malika, Niranjan Sharma, Leela Mishra, Athavle, Omprakash Sharma, C L Shah, Narbada Shankar, Agha etc in it.

Four songs from this movie have been discussed in the past. Here is the fifth song from the movie. This song is sung by Mukesh and Lata. Qamar Jalalabadi is the lyricist. Music is composed by Kalyanji Anandji.

The song is picturised as a stage performance song. On stage, Mehmood in his imagination substitutes the lead female dancer with Ameeta and imagines lip syncing this duet with her.

It goes without saying that the auditorium is houseful. But seeing that the lead actors are already onstage, there was no necessity for reserving front row seats for them among the audience.:)

PS-I request our knowledgeable readers to help identify the female dancer whom Mehmood imagines to be Ameeta all the time in the picturisation.

Mention of RK Films brings to mind the unbroken partnership of 22 long years between the music director duo of Shankar Jaikishan and the songwriters Shialnedra and Hasrat Jaipuri.  Starting from ‘Barsaat’ in 1949, and all the way up to ‘Mera Naam Joker’ in 1971, this quartet ruled the music and songs at RK Films, collaborating for every RK film produced during this period (with the exception of Shailendra, who passed away in 1966).

Remembering Hasrat Jaipuri on the anniversary of his birth today (15th April).

Hasrat was born Iqbal Husain, in 1922 in Jaipur.  His grandfather, Fida Husain, played an important role in his education, ensuring that the young Iqbal got training in Urdu and Persian, besides the regular curriculum at the school.  In 1940, when he was 18, he came to Bombay.  His first employment was with the local bus service as a conductor.  He had started writing poetry while he was at school.  In Bombay, he would participate at the local ‘mushairas’ whenever he could.  At one such gathering, he met with Prithviraj Kapoor, who was impressed with his poetical artistry.  He introduced the young man to his son, Raj Kapoor.  Raj Kapoor was planning the film ‘Barsaat’ at that time.  He took Iqbal, now known more popularly by his pen name – Hasrat, on board for this film.  Two songs by him were included in the film – “Jiya Beqaraar Hai, Chhai Bahaar Hai” and “Chhod Gaye Baalam, Mujhe Haaye Akela Chhod Gaye”.  Thus was launched the career of Hasrat Jaipuri, who continued to write for Hindi films all the way till 1999, the year he passed away.

This song is from the 1966 film ‘Sher Afghan’.  As per records, this is the last film of the music director duo Husnlal Bhagatram.  After this film, the two parted company, with Husnlal migrating to Delhi.  This film is the only one in which Hasrat Jaipuri has written all the lyrics for the music of this duo.  They had come together earlier in the 1961 film ‘Apsara’, but in that film, there were three lyricists (GS Nepali and Qamar Jalaalabaadi, besides Hasrat), and Hasrat Jaipuri wrote just one or two songs for that film.

The film is directed by BR Jhingan for Shankar Movietone, Bombay.  The star cast includes Nishi, Premnath, Suresh, Maruti, Zeb Rehman, Prithviraj, Heeralal, and Ulhas amongst others.  The singing voices in this duet are of Mukesh and Suman Kalyanpur.

With this song, the film ‘Sher Afghan’ opens its account on the blog today. The song itself is a simple and unhurried expression of pleasure as the lovers are counting their blessings for having found each other.  A softly sung song of happiness, that is made special by the voice of Mukesh.
Listen and enjoy.

Song – Ae Bahaar e Zindagi Tum Mil Gayin Sab Kuchh Mila (Sher Afghan) (1966) Singers – Mukesh, Suman Kalyanpur, Lyrics – Hasrat Jaipuri, MD – Husnlal Bhagatram

ae bahaar e zindagi tum mil gayin

sab kuchh mila

ishq ka daaman mila
haathon mein jannat aa..aa gayi
pyaar ka humdum mila
ik bekhudi si chhaa gayi
ae nazar ki bandgi tum mil gaye
sab kuchh mila

Not many debuts can be better than starting with the song “Afsaana Likh Rahi Hoon. . .” (‘Dard’, 1947).  His innings lasted for 23 years.  A long time in which he could not even complete a century of films.  He has written about 750 songs in 89 films across his career.  Typecasting, or more correctly to state, pairing groupism was responsible for this state of affairs.  All along his career, his partnership with music directors remained primarily confined to just three – Naushad Sb, Ghulam Mohammed Sb and Ravi.  His films with other music directors are really few and far between.

Remembering Shakeel Badayuni on the anniversary of his passing away today (20th April).

As I checked his filmography, in 62 of his 89 films in all, he is paired with the the three names listed above.  His remaining 27 films are spread across 13 music directors.  And the number of films with each music director – just 1 and 2.  Hemant Kumar is the only music director with whom he worked in three films that were released – ‘Bees Saal Baad’ and ‘Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam’ in 1962, and ‘Bin Baadal Barsaat’ in 1963.  He also worked with C Ramchandra in three films, however one of them remained unreleased – ‘Zindagi Aur Maut’ (1965), ‘Wahaan Ke Log’ (1967) and ‘Jitne Door Utne Paas’ (UR).

Today I have selected a song of the film ‘Wahaan Ke Log’, wherein he worked with C Ramchandra.  This film makes its debut on the blog today.

The theme of space travel and extra terrestrial life forms is not recent in Hindi films.  One can find such titles as ‘Chaand Ki Duniya’ (1959), ‘Chaand Par Chadhaai’ (1967) etc.  The film ‘Wahaan Ke Log’ also belongs to the same genre.  The film is directed by NA Ansari for the banner Bundelkhand Films. The cast of actors includes Pradeep Kumar, Tanuja, Nilofer, NA Ansari, Shobhna Samarth, Sapru, Johnny Walker, Umadutt, Lakshmichaya, Champak, Shukla, Bela Bose, Anant Tiwari, Lalit Kapoor, Prithvi, Vijay Khote, Latif, Ratan Gaurang, Santosh Virdi, Lamba, Jaggi, Suneel Chakravarty, Pradeep Sharma, Raheem, Raj Malik, Durga Prasad, Maqbool, Hazara Singh, Sheela R, Manmauji, and Khurshid etc.

The film has five songs in all.  All the five songs are prepared by the team of Shakeel Badayuni and C Ramchandra.  The song that I have selected is sung by Mukesh.  And of course, it goes without saying that it is the voice that makes this song extra special.  On screen, the song is performed by Pradeep Kumar, with Tanuja, his lady love, also appearing in the clip, to quietly listen to the expressions of love that are being made for her.

Listen and enjoy.

Song – Hum Tujhse Mohabbat Karke Sanam (Wahaan Ke Log) (1967) Singer – Mukesh, Lyrics – Shakeel Badayuni, MD – C Ramchandra

Lyrics

hum tujhse mohabbat karke sanam
duniya ka fasaana bhool gaye
hum tujhse mohabbat karke sanam
duniya ka fasaana bhool gaye
aankhon se teri ek jam piya
aankhon se teri ek jam piya
phir hosh mein aana bhool gaye
hum tujhse mohabbat karke sanam

jab dekh li teri mast nazar
jab dekh li teri mast nazar
maikhaane ka rasta chhod diya
zulfon pe teri jab aankh padi
saawan ka zamaana bhool gaye
aankhon se teri ek jam piya
aankhon se teri ek jam piya
phir hosh mein aana bhool gaye
hum tujhse mohabbat karke sanam

ae husn teri ulfat ne hamen
ae husn teri ulfat ne hamen
pahuncha diya aisi manzil pe
kadmon pe tere ik sajda kiya
phir sar ko uthaana bhool gaye
aankhon se teri ek jam piya
aankhon se teri ek jam piya
phir hosh mein aana bhool gaye
hum tujhse mohabbat karke sanam

The film ‘Jwala’ was started sometimes in the second half of 1950s.  It was finally released in 1970, a year after the passing away of Madhubala.  As with some of her last films, this film also has deficient and compromised editing, and possible use of a double in some scenes, just to try and complete the storyline.  But forever, this will be known as her last released film.

Produced and directed by MV Raman for his own banner, Raman Productions, the film has an impressive star cast that reads like Sohrab Modi, Madhubala, Sunil Dutt, Pran, Ulhas, David, Jagirdar, Raj Mehra, Asha Parikh, Kamla Lakshman, Vijaylakshmi, Lalita Pawar, Leena Nazar, Roshan, Poonam, Naaz, Shivraj, Chaman Puri, Mukri, Kammo Tripathi, Keshav Kapoor, Vijay, Shobha, Sabeena, Shashi, Bhardwaj, Kesari, Vishwas Kunte, and Daisy Irani.  Interesting to note that Asha Parekh plays a supporting role in this film, that indicates the period of this film to be prior to when Asha ji became a leading lady with the film ‘Dil Deke Dekho’ in 1959.

There are 8 songs in this film, two of which are written by Shailendra and the remaining are by Rajinder Krishan.  This song is from the pen of Rajinder Krishan.  Music is by Shankar Jaikishan.  The singing voice is that of Mukesh, and the online performance is by Sunil Dutt, in the company of a lot of elephants, leopards and lions.  The song is the typical ‘announcing the arrival’ of the leading man.  There are so many songs of this type in Hindi films – maybe we should be getting on with another special category for such songs.

It is the voice the makes everything special for the songs he has sung.  As is the sound of this song.  Recorded sometimes in the second half of 1950s, probably 1957 or thereabouts.  Listen and enjoy.

The Voice of Mukesh #64
– – – – – – – – – – – – – –

Ah, coming back to this series after a long gap, a very long gap indeed.  The last episode of this – “Hum Ne Chakkar Kha Kar Dekha”  was posted last year on 23rd June.  And I am returning to it now, after a gap of more than 10 months.  Before I get to the song itself, let me talk about this gap in the proceedings of this series.

This series was initiated in late 2012.  This series came about after an exchange between Atul ji and myself.  The idea is that we would like to bring all songs by Mukesh to this blog.  Atul ji had expressed concern that some of the songs, especially from the 1940s, are not available and are difficult to trace.  And so I took it upon myself to start tracking down the difficult-to-acquire songs.  For the reasons of popularity of this voice, practically all the songs sung by Mukesh are available, somewhere, with someone.  There are some very loyal fans who have the claim that they have all the songs by Mukesh.  Whereas I have found this claim to be not true in most cases, but checking in with multiple such sources, it is possible to get hold of all the Mukesh songs.

As a starting point, the best and the most benevolent such source is Harish ji Raghuvanshi of Surat.  He is the compiler of the Mukesh Geet Kosh.  At one point in time, he had all the songs of Mukesh on cassette.  In my earlier conversations with him, he had shared the news that a fair part of his cassette collection had once got damaged in a water overflow that submerged part of his house.  After that he does not have a complete collection anymore.

After my dialogue with Atul ji, I started to search for the songs from various other sources that I usually depend upon. Surjit Singh ji, Girdharilal Vishwakarma ji, Zafar Bhai, Pradeep Sharma ji, and Bakshish Singh ji are some of the closest friends who have helped me a lot in getting some rare and difficult to get Mukesh songs, and also allowed me to publish them online.  As of now, from the period of 1940s, i.e. from 1944 to 1950, only two songs of Mukesh are not yet on this blog.  The first one is from his very first film ‘Nirdosh’ (1944) – “Tumhin Ne Mujhko Prem Sikhaaya” a duet with Nalini Jaywant.  As per the research available, this song was never released as a gramophone record.  Since the film itself is not available, the chances of getting to listen to this song are not very good.  So far.

The second song is from the 1947 film ‘Laakhon Mein Ek’ – “Aagre Se Odhni Manga De Balma”, a very delightful duet of Mukesh with Shamshad Begum.  I know the question that has popped in your minds already – how come that I know it is a delightful duet.  Well the thing is that I have heard this song.  It is available in the collection of someone who is not yet ready to share it for publishing online.  Unless another 78 rpm record of this song surfaces, we have to wait for that person to allow its posting.  I am working on it.  :)

The first episode of this series was posted on 6th October, 2012.  Between then and 23rd June 2014, I have posted 62 songs of Mukesh plus one song being contributed by Sadanand ji, from the period of 1944 – 1950, which were not available on our blog.  Some of them were available online, and simply did not find their way here.  But many of them were not available online and I uploaded them from my collection and from the collections of the above named collector friends.  In this process, and with the help of Harmandir ji and Harish ji, we were also able to identify some songs that are originally not listed even in Mukesh Geet Kosh.  As more and more information surfaced after the publication of the Mukesh Geet Kosh, Harish ji and Harmandir ji were able to track down a few more songs.  These additional songs are also now posted on our blog.

So the original target of completing the period from 1944 – 1950, is almost completely done, with the exception of the two songs that I have mentioned above.  Having reached that target, there came a lull, as my focus and attention also got diverted to other similar endeavors.  But coming back to think of the original premise – that we should have all Mukesh songs on the blog, I once again bring my attention to the list of songs in the years 1951 onwards, and make an effort to complete the list progressively.

In the first half of the decade of 1950s, we see a fewer number of songs in this voice.  Reason – Mukesh took upon a fancy for becoming a singing star, and in this period, his attention and energies were diverted to production and acting – ‘Malhaar’ in 1951, ‘Maashooqa’ in 1953 and ‘Anuraag’ in 1956.  In the period of six years from 1951 to 1956, we see barely 60 songs sung by Mukesh, at an average of 10 songs a year.  If we compare this with the previous six years period, we see more than 145 songs in a six year period from 1945 to 1950.  Arguably, this distraction is a significant factor that Mukesh never really got back into the industry as a lead singer in the films, except for Raj Kapoor’s films.  In 1950-51 when he decided focus on film making and acting, his output and popularity were on a steep rise.  To put in perspective, the 145 songs that I mentioned for the period of 1945 to 1950, of these, more than one hundred are from the three year period 1948 – 49 – 50.  The numbers tell a story of a misjudged diversion, and the history of the Hindi film song could have been very different.  Alas, but what is, is.  Destiny is the only one who knows it all, human beings don’t.

So as I started to scan the listed songs against the songs published on the blog, I see that we have already covered the years 1951 – 52 – 53.  Then in 1954 is the first gap that we find.  Now starting to fill up these gaps, this is the first song of the second phase of this series.  The film is ‘Hanuman Janam’.  It is produced by MS Pathak and Durgadas for Rani Productions, Bombay and is directed by Raja Nene.  The cast of actors includes Prem Adeeb, Ranjana, Paro, Miky, Uma Dutt, Kanta Kumari, Raj Adeeb, MS Phatak, Jugnu, Lily Kelkar, Alka, Raj Sehgal, Mohini, Avtar Kishan, Lalit Kapoor, Meera, S Prakash, Meenu, and Chandabai.  The eight songs in this film are written by SP Kalla and the music direction is by Hansraj Behl.  The film makes its debut on the blog today.

Picking up the journey of Mukesh once again, let us listen to this song that is philosophical and inspirational.  The more one listens to this voice, the more one continues to marvel at how it infuses a vibrancy into any song.  This song being no exception.
Listen and Enjoy.

Song – Sukh Dukh Ke Donon Paaon Par (Hanuman Janam) (1954) Singer – Mukesh, Lyrics – SP Kalla, MD – Hansraj Behl

Lyrics

sukh dukh ke
donon paaon par
insaan ye chalta jaata hai
sukh dukh ke donon paaon par
insaan ye chalta jaata hai
mann kaahe ko ghabraata hai
mann kaahe ko ghabraata hai

dukh jeevan ki ek kasauti
dukh jeevan ki ek kasauti
mann ko parkhaa jaata hai
angaaron se tap kar sona
nayi chamak le aata hai
nayi chamak le aata hai
sukh dukh ke donon paaon par
insaan ye chalta jaata hai

andhiaara aanchal mein apne
chhipa ujaala laata hai
dekho din ko jo raaton ka
cheer kaleja aata hai
cheer kaleja aata hai
sukh dukh ke donon paaon par
insaan ye chalta jaata hai

jo dukh se ghabraa kar apna. . . haan
jo dukh se ghabraa kar apna
jeevan deep bujhaata hai
wo kaayar apne hi haathon
apne paap badhaata hai
apne paap badhaata hai
sukh dukh ke donon paaon par
insaan ye chalta jaata hai

(You must have heard the song – “Badaa Hi CID Hai Wo Neeli Chhatri Waala”.  It is on our blog.  Seems as if this song needs to be modified.  Like This – “Bade Hi CID Hain, Ye Atul Gang Ke Members, Gaana Guess Karne Mein Hain Awwal Number”.  Sorry, this one is not yet on the blog).

Earlier in the morning yesterday, an email from Avinash ji landed in the mailbox.  It started off with the phrase “saari kadiyaan judti nazar aa rahi hain” (all the links seem to be falling in place) – sounding very ominous and very much in line with the gangland traditions, NA Ansaari and the Mastermind.  The fun part is that the gang members have been on this secret mission for some days now.  They have been chipping away at the “cloak of mystery”, and have been quite successful at getting to the right answer – the song for this special post.

Ah yes, the special post.  ‘11111’.  ‘Paanch Ikkey’. ‘Five Aces’.  Now that is a lot to chew on as food for thought – five digits, all aces.  I believe, in terms of being lucky, it simply does not get any better.  In a game of cards, max one can be is four aces. But here, we have achieved five.  As I said, it just does not get any better with being in luck.

Yes, this unique post number has generated a lot of interesting conversation and a lot of very exacting ideas.  The story will be quite scrambled before it becomes unscrambled.  And much to my delightful surprise, I made a discovery in the sequence history of posts – a discovery that tells me that there is something at work in this blog, that goes much beyond the human efforts we put in.  I will reveal it shortly, in a later paragraph.

As we were closing in on the eleven thousandth milestone, a little rumbling was heard about this ‘Paach Ikkey’.  Going beyond the next milestone from 11K (i.e. 11k 100) I think it was Avinash ji, or Mahesh ji who pointed out that after the 11K milestone, we have a very unique number approaching – 11111.  Now we are all very familiar with three aces and four aces. When I say all, I mean all those who are card players of any ilk, will be familiar with these ideas.  Coming to think of it, being part of the Mastermind’s gang, my presumption is that all gang members are card sharps of repute.  One can even single out our special agent, ‘Déjà vu 007‘, and his famous escapades at the Casino Royale in Monaco.  And I am sure all other agents in the gang have also had their share of card sharping on the occasion of Laxmi Poojan, the celebrations of the Goddess of Wealth.  But I will take up that in detail some other time.

As this idea settled in, Atul ji reminded me of a message from Mahesh ji a while back, telling about the one unique song which has together the voices of three stalwart singers of the golden era of the Hindi film song.  We agreed that this song should be the ‘Five Aces’ song.  That was a little over a month ago, on 3rd April.  Now started the sometimes apparent and sometime covert operation of bringing in together the number of songs of these singers to coincide their century milestones.  Some hints were available in between, but at that time we were too far off from the milestone to catch the attention.

But the singers apart, I am very sure everyone must also be wondering – how does Amitabh Bachchan fit into this scheme.  Ah ha, so that is the one trick that the cat did not teach the lion.  (I am sure all are familiar with the famous fable, where in the lion goes to his mausi (aunt), the cat, and requests her to be his teacher and mentor.  The mausi teaches him many tricks and capabilities.  One day, the lion turns on his teacher, and chases her to make a meal for the day.  The cat runs and nimbly climbs a tree, while the awe struck lion is huffing and puffing at the base of the tree, watching her climb the branches with his jaw hanging with surprise.  He asks her, how come she did not teach him to climb the trees.  ‘Job Security’, she replied. :D :D

So coming back to how does Amitabh B fits into this scheme.  Well, as the thoughts about the ‘Five Aces’ milestone were rumbling in my mind, I was kind of not satisfied with the fact that we planned to post a unique song for three stalwart singers singing together.  Come on, we are on to ‘Five Aces’, and so we should try to get five major milestones together.  I started to exlore for other options, by reviewing the artists’ stats page.  It became quickly evident that this song is really the closest and the best option.  Then I started to look at the other artists connected with this song.  And got a direct hit almost immediately.  Although Anand Bakshi, the lyricist was still some way off from a century milestone, we found that the music director Laxmikant Pyaarelal was close enough to be the fourth ace. Now the posting plan was becoming really focused, with getting the three singing voices and the music director to the century milestone.

The day of  April 3rd needs to be remembered.  Atul ji and I were very busy on email back and forth that day.  After agreeing to bring together the three stalwart singers, it was on this day itself that we identified Laxmikant Pyaarelal as the fourth ace.  That done, I was still not satisfied.  So I started to review the actors data.  And that is where Amitabh B now came in.  This is the trick that we “cats” have up our sleeves.  Keeping the detailed data also means that we have data on the actors appearances in the posted songs.  That info is not yet posted on the blog.  So you see, how well the cat’s response of ‘Job Security’ fits into this episode. :D :D

So when I pulled out the data for Amitabh, he was not at all close to a century milestone.  In fact we still needed about 30 more of his appearances to make a milestone.  At first, Atul ji was very apprehensive.  He said – not doable.  His exact words were “. . .out of question”.  We were still about a hundred songs away from the ‘Five Aces’. He said doing 30 songs, and that too for an actor, will be too tall an order.  If it were a singer, lyricist or a music director, then we could try, but not with an actor.  It took some back and forth cajoling and convincing, and finally he agreed.  I felt he had agreed, but he was not convinced.  That is the time I suggested we will also do some of his songs from his recent films.  And an idea was born to talk about his recent films and career phase, as opposed to talking about his films and songs from the 1970s and 80s, that most of us are more familiar with. I started to post that series. But I could make out that he was nervous.  To the extent that he started to post Amitabh songs in a hurry and a flurry.  Getting to the point when on some days he posted two and even three Amitabh songs in a single day.  Gang members started to raise eyebrows and started to query and comment – what is the big Amitabh event in the offing.  Alas, but in the absence of actor’s data, no one could get to the correct guess.

Anyway, that then rounded up our five aces. So the current tally for this spectacular milestone today, is as follows,

Mohammed Rafi              –              2400
Kishore Kumar                 –              900
Mukesh                              –              700
Laxmi-Pyaare                   –              600
Amitabh Bachchan          –              200

Gosh, what a spectacular confluence this milestone has accomplished.  It is for the first time that we have so many century celebrations converge concurrently.  And the planning and execution for this journey is as interesting as the milestone itself.  Atul ji and I had to keep a very close watch as the numbers progressed, to make sure that none of the 5 artist overstepped the 99 mark.  Many regular contributors have been at the receiving end of this strategy, as we continued to hold back songs sent in to us, which could effect the numbers for individual artists.  Sincere apologies to all, for this seemingly neglectful behavior on our part, but as explained, it is all part of a bigger design.

In fact I myself was very close to upsetting the apple cart (or the songs bandwagon :) ).  I prepared a post, and was working on it online on the blog.  This post is part of my series of sales pitch songs.  In between I took a break for other things, and then returned to complete it.  I found it to be locked by Atul ji.  I was surprised.  This had never happened before.  Why is that Atul ji is blocking a post?  Suddenly it struck me, and I went to my email inbox.  Sure enough, there was a message from Atul ji, sitting there, telling me of the issue with the post.  Actually, the song I was going to post includes the voice of Rafi.  If it had got published then our scorecard for ‘Five Aces’ would have been topsy turvy.  So, saved in the nick of the time by a diligent boss ;).

As we progressed, we actually hit two other milestones. Both were on our initial list of consideration for the ’Five Aces’.  We made it to the 300th song for music director Chitragupt on 23rd April (“Kaahe Baansuriya Bajaule”, ‘Ganga Maiya Tohe Piyari Chadaibo’, 1962) and also to the 600th song for music director duo Shankar Jaikishan on 26th April (“Chalo Bhool Jaayen Jahaan Ko Yahaan Do Ghadi”, ‘Do Jhooth’,1975).

Is there another thing to add?  Maybe.  Ok yes. One more thing to add.  Ek film ka naam yaad aata hai  (I am reminded of a film name) –  ‘Bhai Ho To Aisa’ (1972).  Now we should have another film ‘Behan Ho To Aisi’.  In the back and forth guessing game that has been going on between the gang members, it is Khyati Ben who has also been tracking the number of posts by yours truly.  Yes, I make it to a personal century milestone today, reaching 900 posts.  Once again, when we started discussing the ‘Five Aces’ target, I mentioned to Atul ji that I would like to take a shot at reaching the 900 mark.  I was still more than 25 posts away. Atul ji’s first reaction was to express apprehension that I may be taking up a target much too ambitious. But then I promised him that I will do better than usual.  It has been hectic as usual on the personal and work fronts, with an unplanned travel thrown in by the circumstances, for good measure.  I have been pegging away at it. I know that the pace of reaching this milestone has been slower than how Atul ji would have liked to push it.  And I thank him with sincere emotions, for the patience and the latitude that he has allowed me.  That also meant delaying lyrics and posts by other gang members, but he allowed me to plan it my way, and do it.  It has meant quite a string of late nights for me, but the run has been worth all the effort put in.  In fact, I was working on this post last night, but after 1 am my time, I just could not keep up, and had to crash.  And with the daytime and all its distractions, I have been delayed further, more than I had planned.  A part of this post is being worked on in the car, as I am traveling with mom to visit her sister in Gurgaon (a satellite town a little distance away from Delhi).  My Mausi has undergone surgery to install a pacemaker, and today’s family visit has been overdue for some days now.

But I am digressing.  Back to, yes, I was writing about Khyati Ben. Thank you for keeping track of my personal progress.  Ah yes, that is what the good teachers do, right?  I hope my latest homework assignment is up to the mark. :)

And now about the startling discovery. Just on another thought, as I am writing this piece, I went back to the songs with post nos. with all ‘1’s. And what I discover is nothing less than providential. And by providential, I mean something that simply cannot be attributed to coincidence.  The post no. ‘1’  is “Miley Na Phool To Kaanton Se Dosti Kar Li” from ‘Anokhi Raat’ (1968).  Then after nine songs, at post number ‘11’ we have “Mere Mehboob Qayaamat Hogi” from “Mr X In Bombay” (1964).  Then at post no. ’111’ appears the song “Darpan Ko Dekha, Tu Ne Jab Jab Kiya Singaar” from film ‘Upaasna’ (1971). Jumping ahead to post no. ‘1111’, we find the song “Tera Mera Saath Rahe” from the film ‘Saudagar’ (1973).  Note the singers – the first song is a solo by Rafi Sb, the second is a solo by Kishore Kumar, the third is a solo by Mukesh, and the fourth is a solo by Lata Mangeshkar.  Exactly the four singers whose voices appear in this song, which is at ‘11111’.  If this is coincidence, then it must be the most fantastic coincidence that I have ever come across. And if this is planning, then all hats off to Atul ji, what fantastic planning. But if it is neither, then there must a natural design to things that falls in place without our contributing anything to it.  Simply unbelievable.

‘Amar Akbar Anthony’ – what to write about this iconic film from 1977.  The siblings lost and found formula, with all ingredients that ensure pure entertainment.  One of the kind of films, after seeing which, the exiting crowd would comment – “Paisa Vasool Hai Bhai” (it was worth the money spent).  With three pairs of romances to handle, personal animosities going back to decades between Kishanlal (role played by Pran) and Robert (role played by Jeevan), a family disrupted and separated, the separate ways they go make a solid integration for a communal and social harmony theme – all wonderfully spun together at a pace that is just right – slow enough to allow every moment to be enjoyed, and fast enough to make you miss the bloopers.  There is enough cliché emotions thrown in – all three sons together giving blood to their (temporarily) blind mother in the hospital, with no one wiser about the actual relationships; father, on the wrong side of the law, encountering his police officer son digging up the toy pistol he had buried twenty years earlier; and more.  And there is more than enough comic situations that keep the watching moments alive.  Of course the Big B taking the cake with his on screen performance of the song – “My Name Is Anthony Gonsalves”.

But besides all these, the thing to write home about is the songs and the music of this film.  Practically all the songs became popular hits.  And for the sentimentalists amongst the lovers, this song was created.  When we talk about the short and sweet of the sentiments expressing love for one another, no song does it better than the timeless and peerless icon from ‘Shri 420’ (1954), which simply says, “Ramaiya VastaVaiya, Main Ne Dil Tujhko Diya”.  In my humble opinion, no other song expresses this emotion better.

But as I listen to this song, I feel we are not too far.  Listening to this song, one gets a rising feeling in the heart, as the lines play themselves out.  It is the limitless submission promised in the words “Bolo To Jiyen, Bolo To Mar Jaayen”, that bunches up the emotions in the heart and bring it into a lump in the throat –

Love for you has happened in me
(I am all yours now)
Tell me, and I will even end my life at your bidding

Simple words, beautifully strung together, and tuned to such a pleasing melody. It  simply cannot be bettered.  We have Kishore Kumar singing for Amitabh Bachchan, Mukesh singing for Vinod Khanna, Rafi Sb singing for Rishi Kapoor (mind you, the youngest of the lot :) ), and Lata Mangeshkar has given her voice to all the three ladies – Parveen Babi, Shabana Azmi and Neetu Singh.

The song is picturized in three parts.  There is exuberance and energy in the first part, with Amitabh taking the lead with his antics.  The time was when in the early 70s, the tall fellow did not know what to do with his height, as he tried to act romantic. But by mid 1970s, he had quite a handle on how to leverage his height to his advantage.  As is apparent from the calisthenics one sees in this song. He is no more conscious of his height, and takes the situation in his stride, quite literally.

The second part is the calm and reserved Vinod Khanna and Shabana Azmi, both trying to find ways to express themselves beyond the bashfulness that is innate to this scene.  And the sentiments are further heightened by the voice of Mukesh that plays in this segment.  And the third part is playful naughtiness personified in Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Singh.  The scene is played out in a toy train for children, although the antics of the two main players are anything but childish.

A love song that I believe one cannot get tired of.  And a love song that I very humbly dedicate to our entire Atuldom gang, all the way from the Mastermind to Peevesie, to each and every one of you,

Humko Tumse Ho Gaya Hai Pyaar Kya Karen. . .

‘11111’ – ‘Five Aces’ – cannot be any more true than this, cannot be any more lucky than this. :)

Troika of the latest century singers – Mukesh, Rafi and Kishore – 1. Mukesh
——————————————————————————-

Sometime in the middle of April 2015, I had sent two write-ups to Atul ji and coincidentally, both these write-ups were on the songs sung by Mukesh. Atul ji sent me a reply saying that for the time being, he was avoiding posting songs of Mukesh as also of Rafi who are on their way to hitting centuries of their songs in the Blog. So he reckoned that my write ups on Mukesh’s songs may have to be held back for a few days. It was apparent that articles for the special events had already been planned.

A click on ‘Some stats’ page of the Blog revealed that while Mukesh was close to attaining his 700th song, Mohammed Rafi was only one short of his 2400th song in the Blog. A further glance on this page revealed that Kishore Kumar too was also very close to hitting his 900th song. So it was rare ‘celestial’ event like that of conjunction of planets Jupiter, Venus and Mars in the triangle shape which is expected on October 28, 2015. And all the three playback singers are nothing less than celestial stars along with Talat Mehmood and Manna Dey. There was an inner urge in me to pay tributes to the troika of playback singers on this unique conjunction of century songs. A thought tickled in my mind. What if I was to select special songs for the troika of playback singers on the occasion?

My immediate reference point was the list of my favourite songs which I have created on YT. While I had no difficulties in choosing a song each of Mukesh and Mohammed Rafi, unfortunately, I had no songs of Kishore Kumar in the list as almost all of my favourites songs of Kishore Kumar have already been covered in the Blog. And I have a habit of deleting songs from the list of my favourite songs once they are covered in the Blog. At last, I could get a rare song of Kishore Kumar of my liking after a long search on YT.

I propose to write a three part short articles on the occasion of the completion of century songs of Mukesh, Mohammed Rafi and Kishore Kumar in that order. In this write up, I present a non-filmy song ‘roothi huyi taqdeer ko ab kaise manaaun’(1949) sung by Mukesh under the music direction of V A Balsara. The lyrics are penned by Madhukar Rajasthani. I could not get the year in which the NFS was recorded. However, I find on http://www.singermukesh.com that music director V A Balsara had recorded three NFS of Mukesh in 1949. With the style of Mukesh’s singing which is evident in the NFS under discussion, one can presume that this NFS too was recorded in 1949.

This song reminds me of ‘roothi huyi taqdeer’ for Mukesh who, in his jest to become a singer-actor, neglected his playback singing career in favour of acting. In the event, he lost out on both counts in the 50s. His mentor Anil Biswas left the film industry in the early 60s and Naushad preferred Mohammed Rafi over him. It was really his hard work which made possible for him to reclaim some of his lost ground in Hindi film industry in the 60s and early 70s.

Song-Roothhi huyi taqdeer ko ab kaise manaaun (Mukesh NFS)(1949) Singer-Mukesh, Lyrics-Madhukar Rajasthani, MD-V A Balsara

Lyrics

roothi huyi taqdeer ko ab kaise manaaun
ab kaise manaaun
tootha huwa sitaar hai ab kaise bajaaun
ab kaise bajaaun

kismat se miley hain ye mujhe do nazraane ae ae
ae ae ae
khaane ko mili thokar
peene ko miley aansoo
gham aur museebat se sada yaari nibhaaun
nibhaaun
ab kaise manaaun

ujdi huyi nagri hai meri toota huwa hai dil
haay toota huwa hai dil
keh rahi hai mujhko meri alvida bahaaren aen aen
keh rahi hai mujhko meri alvida bahaaren
poochha jo unse maine ab kaise bataaun
ab kaise manaaun
roothi huyi taqdeer ko ab kaise manaaun
ab kaise manaaun

In our day to day life we face some or the other discomforting and problematic situations, most of which get sorted out over time. The end of such situations is the beginning of happiness.

One of the discomforting situations which I have started facing in the post- retirement years is that I suddenly remember the tune of a song which I had heard quite often in my younger days on the radio but I am not able to recall the wordings or other details. I become restless until I find the song. It is by chance that I get to listen to the song on YT or on the Blog after months. And the pleasure I get in solving this kind of ‘puzzle’ is akin to attaining nirvana.

A few days back, I was again in this tricky situation. I suddenly recalled a melodious tune of a song which I had listened on the radio sometime in the later 60s when I had become a proud owner of a transistor radio. I had no clue to the mukhda wordings of the song. Nor could I recall the name of the film and the singers. The only clues I could faintly remember were that the song was from a mythological film and it was a duet. So the canvas was restricted for a successful searching of the particular song.

The first thing I did was to search for the duet songs covered in the Blog from mythological films. To begin with, I searched films starting with ‘Sant’ and ‘Sati’. There were 10 films covered in the Blog with such prefixes. I drew a blank as there were only a couple of duet songs covered in the Blog under these prefixes. Thereafter I randomly checked songs of other mythological films covered in the Blog without any success. I gave up my efforts to search the song.

Two days back, I was looking for a song ‘chamke chaand poonam ka’ from the film ‘Mahasati Behula (1964)’ on the YT which is not covered in the Blog. It so happened that on the same page of YT, there was a video clip of a song from the film ‘Mahasati Anusuya’ (1965). I listened to this song. And eureka, I got the song I was looking for. It was a coincidence that both these songs were from the mythological films with prefix ‘Mahasati’ which I overlooked in my searches.

I have great pleasure in presenting the ‘lost’ song from my memory which I have recalled now. The song is ‘bahut dino se bichhda man ka meet mila’ from the film MAHASATI AUNUSUYA (1965). The song is rendered by Suman Kalyanpur and Mukesh. The song is written by Bharat Vyas which is set to music by S N Tripathi, the doyen of historical and mythological film music. The song is picturised on Jayshree Gadkar and Asim Kumar. There were as many as 17 songs in the film, all written by Bharat Vyas.

The film was produced under the banner of Ranglok Pictures and was directed by Dhirubhai Desai. The star cast included Jayshree Gadkar, Asim Kumar, Anita Guha, Sahu Modak, Sundar, Jeevan, Babloo etc.

After listening to this song, old timers would surely recall that this was one of the popular songs played on the Vividh Bharati in the 60s. For me, this song is ‘bahut dino se bichhda man kaa geet mila’.

Both

Lyrics

bahut dinon se bichhda man kaa meet milaa
bahut dinon se bichhda man kaa meet milaa
mere geet ko rootha hua sangeet milaa aa

bahut dinon se bichhda man kaa meet milaa

neele gagan mein aasha kaa chanda chamkaa
o o o o o
o o o
neele gagan mein aasha kaa chanda chamkaa
jhoomi kiran jab ghoonghat uthha poonam kaa

mere nayan mein mukhda tumhaara damkaa
prano ki paayal mein goonja hai swar chham chham kaa
bahut dino se bichhda man kaa meet milaa
mere geet ko rootha hua sangeet milaa aa
bahut dino se bichhda man kaa meet milaa

din ye milan ke sundar suhaane anoothhe
din ye milan ke sundar suhaane anoothhe
aise madhur pal hamse kabhi na roothhe
ab to piya tere haathon se haath na chhoote
apna salona sapna kabhi na toote
bahut dinon se bichhda man kaa meet milaa
mere geet ko rootha hua sangeet milaa aa
bahut dinon se bichhda man kaa meet milaa

I have been doing some research on the works of Gopaldas Saxena ‘Neeraj’ – both as a poet and a lyricist for Hindi films. Being an admirer of this great poet and lyricist, I have been reading his poems that are available on the websites and also going through the available songs that he wrote for Hindi films. Suffice it to say here that he wrote over 100 songs for about 40 films during his stint in Hindi film industry. After 1975, The rate of his song writing for films had dwindled considerably since 1975, when he began to work from his home in Aligarh. The last time that he wrote a song for a film was for his close friend Dev Anand’s ‘Charge Sheet’ (2011).

During the course of my searches, I came across a beautifully worded song ‘jannat hai dekhni to kisi dil mein aashiyaan bana’ written by Neeraj for the film SHATRANJ KE MOHRE (1974). Mukesh’s equally beautiful rendition of this song has taken this inspirational song to a higher level. This song reinforces my view that a singer gives his best when he gets good lyrics to render. The song is picturised on Rakesh Pandey and Neetu Singh.

I had not heard of the film’s name until a few days back. In fact, I was well aware of a Hindi play by the same name directed by Ramesh Talwar which was staged some time in 1999. The film was produced by Ashok Chandra under the banner of Saket Films and was directed by Shibu Mitra. The star cast included Neetu Singh, Rakesh Pandey, Pradeep Kumar, Satyen Kapoo, Nitin Sethi, Dulari, Geeta Sidharth etc. The film had 4 songs written by three lyricists – Neeraj (2), Nida Fazli (1) and Ravindra Jain (1) who was the music director for the film.

Not much is known about the story of the film. I could not locate the DVD/VCD of the film on internet. But the title of the film would indicate that the film belonged to social genre involving some complex relationships between the characters. Fortunately, videos of all 4 songs of this film is available. I have also given the link of the audio clip of the song which has a better audio than in the video clip.

With this song, the film makes its debut in the Blog.

Song-Jannat hai dekhni to kisi dil mein aashiyaan bana (Shatranj Ke Mohre)(1974) Singer-Mukesh, Lyrics- Neeraj, MD-Ravindra Jain

Lyrics

jannat hai dekhni to kisi dil mein aashiyaan bana
jannat hai dekhni to kisi dil mein aashiyaan bana
phoolon ki ek zameen bana
geeton kaa aasmaan bana

pyaar ki anjuman mein aa ban jaa aaftaab
hai jo suroor ishq to paani bhi hai sharaab
paani bhi hai sharaab
kismat na jo mita sake
aisa koi nishaan bana
jannat hai dekhni to kisi dil mein aashiyaan bana

khushboo-e-gul to ek hai
rangat juda juda
fark-e-nazar mita de to
banda hi hai khuda
banda hi hai khuda aa aa
koi na ghair ho jahaan
aisa bhi ek jahaan bana
jannat hai dekhni to kisi dil mein aashiyaan bana

waqt ki sooni raah mein
hansti hai ek mukaam
aur ye mukaam kab talak
jab tak chhalke jaam
jab tak chhalke jaam
duniya kaa saath chhod de
khwaabon kaa taar yahaan bana
jannat hai dekhni to kisi dil mein aashiyaan bana
phoolon ki ek zameen bana
geeton kaa aasmaan bana

The Voice of Mukesh #65
– – – – – – – – – – – – – –

The film ‘Hanuman Janam’ is a 1954 film.

Of the eight songs, we have two songs sung by Mukesh.  In the previous episode of this series, I had posted the first Mukesh song from this film – “Sukh Dukh Ke Donon Paaon Par”.  Today, I present the second song of Mukesh from this film.  This is ‘Bidaai’ song, the traditional song of farewell, that is an expression of a good bye to a new bride, as she prepares to leave her parents’ home to go and permanently settle in a new home, literally starting off a new life.  In the Indian tradition, this moment is an epitome of emotional flow.  And this moment has been captured in many songs in Hindi films.  On this blog itself, we now have 30 songs that belong to this category.

A very interesting side note to this song.  As I checked online, I find couple of uploads of this song.  As I played the first of them, I found that it seems to end abruptly, just close to the end of the third ‘antaraa’ (stanza).  So I tried the other link.  On playing this second one, I found the same issue with the ending of the song.  Quite intrigued, I went back to my own collection and pulled out the version that I have.  Once again, I found the same situation.  As a last resort, I turned to the definitive source of Mukesh’s songs, the  Mukesh Geet Kosh.  But in that also, I find that the lyrics available are exactly as played out in the audio versions that I had already listened to.

One possible explanation is that the song on the original 78 rpm gramophone record suffers from this discrepancy.  The timing of the song is around 3 minutes and 16 seconds or so.  It means that the original recording of the song is somewhat longer, maybe three and a half minutes or more.  That means that the actual song is longer than the capacity of a 78 rpm record.  So the producers of the record would simply have cropped the audio length to fit on the standard length of a 78 rpm record.  Does not happen often but there are a few such instances in which the song is cropped to fit the standard length, and hence, appears to end abruptly, prior to the actual end of the song.  The only way to check for the complete song now is to locate the video of this film. No luck so far, but let us hope.

Meanwhile, let us listen to this little heard song of Mukesh from 1954, and savor the melancholia that is the hallmark of this voice.
Enjoy.

Song – Gori Peehar Chhod Mukh Hamse Mod (Hanuman Janam) (1954) Singer – Mukesh, Lyrics – SP Kalla, MD – Hansraj Behl

छम छम पाँव बढ़ाए
तड़प तड़प कर माँ की ममता
थाम जिया रह जाये

The Voice of Mukesh #66
– – – – – – – – – – – – – –

The journey following the songs of Mukesh now enters 1955.  As we come into the time period of mid fifties and later, we are going to find more and more songs being already posted.  The songs that are remaining now are the ones which mostly are obscure, and less heard earlier.  But there is fun in filling the gaps.  And if this song is something to go by, it is a lots and lots of fun.

As I started to explore the 1955 list of Mukesh songs, I came to this song first.  It has captured me immediately, with a surprising gasp of delight.  It is songs like this that make this journey and this exploration worth its while.  A song that I have some memories of having heard long back, maybe on just a couple of occasions.  Then it was lost under crowd of the more familiar sounds.  Running into this song today is such an “Aah Haa” experience.  As I said, makes the effort worth its while.  An absolutely delightful composition – light, simple words, and very, very hummable.  And the voice of Mukesh adds the soulful depth that has the unmatchable capacity to enhance the flavors and the feelings a thousand times.

The film is ‘Ghar Ghar Mein Diwali’ which is produced under the banner of Minerva Movietone, the flagship company of Sohrab Modi.  The film is directed by Gajanan Jaagirdar.  The cast of actors is led by Sajjan and Shyama, and includes Gajanan Jagirdar himself, Manorama, Aruch Tarapur, Krishna Kant, Maqbool, Dar Kashmiri, Ramlal, Shaamlal, Jamshed Ji, Shivaji Rathor, Khwaja Sabir, Meenu, Mehmood, Ghulam Mohiuddin, Rajkumar, Qader, Munshi Khanjar, Jilani, Uma Dutt, Bagla, Bhaagi, Jameela, Sinha, Uma, Baby Kala etc.  Interesting to note that even in 1955, Jeevan was still using the name ‘Dar Kashmiri’.  As we scan the Geet Kosh, we find that he was using both names simultaneously, till as late as 1957-58.

The ten songs of this film are all from the pen of Prem Dhawan, except one which is written by Indeewar. The music is by Roshan.  Going by the list of actors, this song in all likelihood would have been picturized on Sajjan.  And from the tone and the rhythm, one can associate a horse being ridden as this song plays. In the absence of the video, I am not sure if I should tag it as a ‘horseback’ song or a ‘tonga’ song, so I have left out that categorization.

Decidedly an expression of a young man’s heart that seems to have just been smitten by a damsel’s glances.  The heart seems to be lost, not being able to decide whether it should remain where it is, or should it fly off to the one that has beckoned it with a promising gaze.  All the gentleman can say is

aadhe udhar hain
aur aadhe idhar
ye hazrat e dil hain na jaane kidhar

An extremely rare and obscure delight, pure delight.  Listen and enjoy.

Song – Aadhe Udhar Hain Aur Aadhe Idhar (Ghar Ghar Mein Diwali) (1954) Singer – Mukesh, Lyrics – Prem Dhawan, MD – Roshan

Lyrics

aadhe udhar hain
aur aadhe idhar
ye hazrat e dil hain na jaane kidhar
un ko khabar hai
na hum ko khabar
ye hazrat e dil hain na jaane kidhar
aadhe udhar hain
aur aadhe idhar

zulfon ki galiyon mein khoye kabhi
hain palkon ki chhaaon main soye kabhi
zulfon mein galiyon mein khoye kabhi
hain palkon ki chhaaon main soye kabhi
dhhondhe to dhoondhe dil ko kahaan
oo oo
dhhondhe to dhoondhe dil ko kahaan
ke aisi lagi hai kisi ki nazar
ye hazrat e dil hain na jaane kidhar
aadhe udhar hain
aur aadhe idhar

unki nazar ka ishaara mila
kuchh apne junoon ka sahaara mila
unki nazar ka ishaara mila
kuchh apne junoon ka sahaara mila
kehte huye ye miyaan majnoo chale
ho oo
kehte huye ye miyaan majnoo chale
ke jab se mili hai nazar se nazar
ye hazrat e dil hain na jaane kidhar
un ko khabar hai
na hum ko khabar
ye hazrat e dil hain na jaane kidhar

“Maaya Jaal”(1962) aka “Jaadoogar” was a partially colour film (which was usual for movies of that era). This movie was directed by Babubhai Mistry for Rajhans Pictures, Bombay. This quintessential B grade movie had Ranjan, Chitra, Manhar Desai, Krishna Kumari, Pal Sharma, Mumtaz Begam, Nazeer, Shree Bhagwan, Maruti, Radhika etc in it.

Here is the first song from this movie to appear in the blog. This song is sung by Lata and Mukesh. Prem Dhawan is the lyricist. Music is composed by S N Tripathi.

Only the audio of this song is available. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw light on the picturisation of this song.

R D Burman composed over 1700 songs in Hindi movies. Only 19 of these songs had the voice of Mukesh in them.

When I came across this figure yesterday (it is mentioned in the book -R D Burman- the man the music), I looked in the blog and also searched the list of R D Burman songs in HFGK.

Following is the list of Mukesh songs composed by R D Burman:

Movie Year of release Song Singer Lyricist Remark
Teesra Kaun 1965 Pyaar Ka fasaana Mukesh, Lata Anand Bakshi
Kati Patang 1970 Jis gali mein tera ghar na ho baalma Mukesh Anand Bakshi
Puraskaar 1970 Ae meri jaan chaand sa gora mukhda Mukesh, Asha Bhonsle S H Bihari
Puraskaar 1970 Nateeja hamaari muhabbat ka Mukesh, Asha Bhonsle S H Bihari
Hangaama 1971 Sooraj se jo kiran ka naata Mukesh, Lata Anjaan
Chhaliya 1973 Zindagi mein aap aaye Mukesh, Vani Jairam Rajinder Krishan
Raja Rani 1973 Haan to main kya keh raha thha Lata, Mukesh, Rajesh Khanna Anand Bakshi
Phir Kab Milogi 1974 Kahin karti hogi wo mera intezaar Mukesh, Lata Majrooh Sultanpuri
Dharam Karam 1975 Ik din bik jaayega part (i) Mukesh, chorus,
part (ii)Mukesh, Sushma Shreshtha,
part (iii)Mukesh, Kishore Kumar, Sushma Shreshtha, chorus
Majrooh Sultanpuri Three parts, counted as three songs
Dharam Karam 1975 Tere hamsafar geet hain tere Mukesh, Kishore Kumar, Asha Bhonsle, chorus Majrooh Sultanpuri
Chaandi Sona 1977 Tujhe bhool ke maati ki putli par Mukesh Majrooh Sultanpuri Three parts, counted as three songs, not yet discussed in the blog
Karm 1977 Karm kaho kismat kaho Mukesh Bharat Vyas Another two line song- Karm kare qismat bane, is counted as a separate song
Mukti 1977 Lalla lalla lorie Mukesh Anand Bakshi
Mukti 1977 suhaani chaandni raaten hamen sone nahin detin Mukesh Anand Bakshi
Naukri 1978 Ooper jaake yaad aayi neeche ki baaten Mukesh, Chorus Anand Bakshi

Most Mukesh-R D Burman songs have already been discussed in the blog. only the songs of “Karm” (1977) and “Chaandi Sona”(1977) remain to be discussed.

Here is the Mukesh song (s) from “Karm”(1977). This song is penned by Bharat Vyas. The last two lines beginning from “karm kare qismat bane..” is the second part of the song and is counted as another song. Thus Mukesh gets credited for singing two songs in this movie.

After this song, “Chaandi Sona”(1977) song will be the only Mukesh R D Burman song that has not yet been covered in the blog.

PS-Muvys, as well as Mr Harish Raghuwanshi have pointed out that Naukri(1978) too had a Mukesh song. My thanks to them both for pointing it out. Now I have updated the table. So the songs of “Chaandi Sona”(1977) and “Naukri”(1978) are the only Mukesh-R D Burman songs missing from the blog as of now.

Mukesh and his Composers – 1
———————————
Naushad, Madan Mohan and SD Burman were some of the many music directors who composed songs for Mukesh. So why am I singling out these three great composers only? Read on.

I personally like to club these composers in one category as they have Mukesh songs in their initial films, but later on had huge gaps in terms of years before they accommodated him again albeit for a few songs. I would like to write three short posts on each of the combos.

Taking Naushad-Mukesh first, the association of which started in 1948, when both were at their peaks.

The first two films of the combo were Anokhi Ada and Mela both in 1948. Mukesh sang about a dozen songs in these two films alone. It was followed by 5 solo in 1949 (including the unreleased) in Andaz. So in just two years we have whopping 16-17 songs of the combo in three films. The immense popularity of these songs is now established history and so is the fact that about 10 of them were picturised on Dilip Kumar in Mela and Andaz.

After this phase, the combo did not cross path for nearly two decades until Saathi in 1968. The reason for this hiatus does not seem to be clear and it appears there was no reason also. Unlike the Talat Mahmood episode in Babul, nothing happened between Mukesh and Naushad, even though Naushad had warned Mukesh not to follow the footsteps of Saigal as far as drinking is concerned.

It was just happenstance that Naushad worked with Mohd Rafi practicallyin every film thereafter and Mukesh tried his hand in acting till he gave up his dream of becoming a actor-singer in 1958.

On hindsight, it was Mukesh who introduced Lata to Naushad while Andaz was being made. And one notices that there was only one Lata-Mukesh duet for Naushad in almost three decades.

Saathi 1968 had 3 solos and 2 duets for Mukesh. it was almost curtains-down for both of them apart from a couple of songs here and there. So the magic was sustained only in 1948-49.

In all Mukesh sang about 26-28 songs for Naushad considering unreleased films and songs recorded but not included in films etc. It is difficult to pin-point the exact figure as there will be version songs, unreleased songs etc. In spite of this gap of two decades without a song it seems that, numerically Mukesh was the male-singer with second highest figures for Naushad after Rafi saab.

Of the remaining couple of songs of the combo yet to feature on the blog, I have selected the present song from a film called Tangewala released in 1972. It had Rajendra Kumar, Mumtaz, Sujit, Kamini Kaushal, I S Johar, Jagdish Raaj, Bhagwan, Mohan Choti, Kumud Chhugani, Kanhaiya Lal, Jr Mehmood, Leela Mishra, Paintal etc. The film was produced and directed by Naresh Kumar.

The whole film seems to be a flashback as this song is sung while the titles are being shown at the beginning with scenes of Rajendra Kumar in his younger days inserted in between. The video link shows Rajendra Kumar as an old beggar seeking alms in a train.

Incidentally, when I began to write my first post for the blog about 2 years back, this was the song which I had selected with a write up on my observations of a cat and its kitten with no relevance to the song. For some reason, the song was not posted and I am really happy for I got to include it in this series where I have very little choice of selecting songs that are not represented on the blog. Taking a verse from the song, all works done with good intention have good endings only. So I think this song was destined to appear today only. :)

This highly philosophical song has been composed by Naushad Ali, sung by Mukesh and written by Majrooh Sultanpuri (The trio had successfully worked in Andaz 1949 as well as Saathi 1968). In the next part, we will take up the association of Mukesh with Madan Mohan.

Song-Kar bhala hoga bhala ant bhale ka bhala(Taangewaala)(1972) Singer-Mukesh, Lyrics-Majrooh Sultanpuri, MD-Naushad

Lyrics

jinke kaaran galiyon galiyon
bhatke thhak kar choor huye
beech dagar mein chod ke dekho o
wo bhi hamse door huye ae ae

kar bhala
hoga bhala
ant bhale ka bhala
kar bhala
hoga bhala
ant bhale ka bhala
aaj sab kuchh hai tera aa
kal ka hai kisko pata
aaj sab kuchh hai tera aa
kal ka hai kisko pata
kar bhala
hoga bhala
ant bhale ka bhala

jaisa koi beej hai bota
waisi chadhti bela yahaan
kaisa raaja kaun bhikhaari
sab karmon ka khel yahaan
saath kisi ke mela aa
koi bhatke akela aa aa
kar bhala
hoga bhala
ant bhale ka bhala

ghar baste hain roz jahan mein
bas ke ujadne ke liye
milta hai har ek yahaan par
mil ke bichhadne ke liye
chalti dagar hai duniya
ek aaya ek chala aa
kar bhala
hoga bhala
ant bhale ka bhala
kar bhala
hoga bhala
ant bhale ka bhala

Mukesh and his Composers – 2
——————————————
Mukesh started his singing and acting career in 1940. Madan Mohan started his composing and singing career a decade later in 1950. His first film Aankhen had some interesting trivia.
• Meena Kapoor sung her only song for Madan Mohan, the beautiful “Moree Atariyaa Pe Kaagaa Bole Moraa”.
• Madan Mohan himself sang a duet with Shamshad Begum.
• Raj Khosla, the famous director and producer has sung a rail song in this movie.
• Lata Mangeshkar was not part of this debut movie of Madan Mohan’s.

Mukesh was very much part of Madan Mohan’s first film, singing a sad solo and a comic/teasing duet with Shamshad Begum which was not exactly his forte. However he comes out with flying colours in this duet too. Thereafter it took Madan Mohan seven years to recall Mukesh for another song. The table below provides the list of songs where the duo have figured together.

S No. Name of song Movie Name Year of release Co singer if any Lyricist
1 Preet lagaa ke maine Aankhen 1950 Raja Mehdi Ali Khan
2 Hamse nain milaana Aankhen 1950 Shamshad Begam Raja Mehdi Ali Khan
3 Kyaa saath mera doge Samundar 1957 Lata Rajindar Krishan
4 Tum chal rahe ho Duniya Na Maane 1959 Lata Rajindar Krishan
5 Hum chal rahe thhe Duniya Na Maane 1959 Rajindar Krishan
6 Ek manzil raahi do Sanjog 1961 Lata Rajindar Krishan
7 Bhooli huyi yaadon Sanjog 1961 Rajindar Krishan
8 Chal chal mere dil Akeli Mat Jaiyyo 1963 Johny Whisky Majrooh Sultanpuri
9 * Zindagi zindagi Chowkidaar 1974 Rafi, Asha Bhonsle Rajinder Krishan

No, this is not a sample list but the complete works of the combo. Considering the fact that Madan Mohan passed away in 1975, you have 9 songs in 25 years. On an average, this comes to around one song in three years. If one has a look at the list above 1-7 are excellent songs which are very well known. Why they did not catch up with other more frequently is again not known. As I said in the last post in this case too there may be no reason whatsoever.

Lata Mangeshkar who was very close to both Mukesh and Madan Mohan has three duets in 25 years.

Anyway, 8 of the above 9 songs are already in the blog. The present song is from the film Chowkidaar released in 1974 and directed by Shyam Rahlan. The cast included Sanjeev Kumar, Yogeeta Bali, Vinod Khanna, Om Prakash etc. The song itself is a triad with Mukesh, Asha and Rafi. It’s written by Rajinder Krishan. Even though this may not be a good song by Madan Mohan standards, I developed a liking for it as I had to listen to it several times to jot down the lyrics and attribute them to various singers. :)

In the next part of this series we shall take up the more curious case of S D Burman’s collaboration with Mukesh.
