The voice of Mukesh continues to enthral the world of music. Today (22 July) is his birth anniversary and I present here a short song from the film ‘Jis Desh Mein Ganga Behti Hai’ (1960). This film has already been Yippeee’d on the blog, but this particular rendition can as well be taken as an additional separate song.

The video shows Raj Kapoor on the screen, though he does not lip-sync the song. Mukesh in his usual trademark voice recites two dohas (couplets) of Sant Kabir Das. There are some comments on the internet that this short song and scene were missing in the film. I request readers to throw more light on this aspect.

Though there are many websites dedicated to the dohas of Kabir, I requested our Sudhir ji to not only write the lyrics for me but also translate the same. I thank him profusely for the help rendered.

I feel that the voice and the empathy expressed by Mukesh will be more pronounced and appreciated if one understands the meaning of the dohas first. Mukesh, who has recorded the original rendition of the popular ‘Ramcharit Maanas’ of Tulsidas (abridged version), also has a lot of bhajan’s in the film and non-film category. Quite a few of these bhajanas are yet to appear on the blog.

I have been away from the blog as far as song postings is concerned, due to some personal commitments, but will surely come back with more compilations of Mukesh with the artists in the two on-going series. There are a couple of newly discovered songs which will be introduced in the very near future.

With this short song wherein the clarity of the pronunciation of words and the heart-felt expression in the voice is very much perceptible, I once again join numerous Mukesh fans in remembering him on the anniversary of his birth.

One who eternally lives in grave
Can he ever sleep in peace

Notes: In his couplets, Kabir Das has a specific addressal. When the message of the couplet is a teaching directed towards others, the form of addressal used is ‘sadho‘. When the message of the couplet is directed inwards, then the addressal used is ‘Kabir‘ or ‘Kabira‘. But as is seen in all cases, the message is meant for all. In this couplet, the poet is cautioning the human, not to continue sleeping. Now this sleeping is not simply the physical sleep that one resorts to when the body is tired. The poet is referring to the sleep of ignorance, that most human being undergo, as they spend their lives on this planet. The ignorance being referred to is the ignorance of the true nature of the self and of this material world. The human seeks happiness, but is almost always drowning in the tears of sorrow. So the poet says, wake up and realize the true nature, and don’t continue to cry for your sorrows. Because the life on this planet has only one destination, that is death. We are all residing in graves that have already been prepared for us. For a living person who is existing in a grave, can there be any happiness to be found (in the grave), can such a person ever have a peaceful sleep.

Notes: The poet is exhorting the learner, to contemplate the true nature of the cycle of life and death – that nothing in this world is permanent. The process of living entails certain tasks to sustain the life; these are low level tasks, that need to be dispositioned and done with. Do not lose yourself in this process of life, for there are other truer paths that one has to traverse. Make efforts to improve, enrich, clean up the awareness and the knowledge of these paths, so that the travel on these paths of truth is free of obstacles and pain.

In the given scenario, Raju, the village bumpkin and singer, is torn between how to sort out the problem he is facing – neither the dacoits are willing to just meekly give up their profession and surrender, nor is the police showing any benevolence towards them, to try and bring them in alive. In the scene just before these couplets, Raju is at the residence of the police commissioner (role played by Raj Mehra), and is pleading for leniency in return for their surrender. While this conversation is in progress, one of the dacoits, on the instructions of Raaka (role played by Pran), who is now the new gang leader, throws a message tied to a stone, into the house, breaking a window pane. The message is a challenge to the police commissioner, to hand over Raju and Kammo (role played by Padmini) to the dacoits. (Padmini has left the dacoit’s hideout with Raju, much to the chagrin of Raaka). The police commissioner is infuriated, and in anger expresses his will to capture all dacoits and hang them. Raju is now in a fix; what to do. The police won’t listen to him, and for their own reasons. And Raaka, blinded by his obsession for Kammo, and his vexation at Raju, for being the preferred person in Kammo’s heart, isn’t going to oblige by listening to Raju.

In this quandary, Raju is not able to sleep. And then these two couplets play in his mind. He is not lip syncing, but his expressions are so impressive, as he listens to this voice from within. This voice sings two couplets to him, telling him that it is useless to seek happiness in this life and this world, which is only sorrows – the epithet used is “jaaka vaasa gor mein”; that all humans are living in graves already dug for them. The second couplet advises that one should only contemplate on the truth of life, and seek out the path that will take towards that truth. And once that path is evident in the mind, then the personal striving should be cleanse and enrich this path, leading one towards the truth.

When this second couplet plays, a smile descends on the lips of Raju, a light is seen and a determination is made. Raju leaves the police commissioners home immediately, leaving Kammo sleeping inside the room. One does not see him leave, but the next scene is Kammo waking up only to find Raju missing. On enquiry, she is told that he left during the night, but where he has gone, is not known to anyone. But Kammo knows, that Raju has returned to the gang’s hideout.

Teri Wo Chaal Hai Ke Tauba

It was a surprise for many – when the Mukesh Geet Kosh was published (in 1985), and the compilation, at that time, was able to list less than a thousand songs in all – filmi, non filmi, other languages all combined. It was a general impression carried amongst the fans that well, yes, Mukesh has not sung as many songs as Rafi Sb, but then, less than thousand?? And then, it became a new topic to write about and discuss – why is it so that the impression is that Mukesh has recorded a lot many more songs than are popularly known.

Remembering Mukesh on the 94th anniversary of his birth today (22nd July, 2017).

This topic became a subject of curiosity amongst fans. Many years later, on an occasion of a get together with famed film historian and writer, Nalin ji Shah (of Bombay), this topic got discussed. I was part of that get together. Nalin explained this quite at length. As per him, this is a mental extrapolation that happens in the minds of the fans. While the main line playback singers like Rafi Sb, Kishore Kumar etc have their compilations listed in terms if multiple thousands of songs, still, the human mind captures and sustains a limited number as popular an favorites. No doubt, if one listens to an unheard or an obscure song, the appreciation is most certainly there. But the mind would retain only so much in the memory, as favorites. So when that number is juxtaposed against the total list of compilation, there is a level of appreciation associated with the estimate of the quantity versus the list of what a personal preference would term as “good quality” favorites. Given the case of Rafi Sb, this number may work out to be 1 is to maybe 4 or 5, in the minds of discerning fans.

When a similar sense of reasoning gets applied to the portfolio of Mukesh’s recordings, a different outcome appears. When a discerning fan would apply this estimation to the compilation of Mukesh’s list of songs, then the estimate of the quantity versus the list of “good quality” favorites would work out to be 1 is to maybe 1 or 2. And then just by an expectation of the extrapolation, the mind succinctly assumes that there are or there will be many more songs of the singer, that are not retained in the memory as “good quality” favorites. And hence the disbelief about the total listed in the compilation.

In other words, as a general impression, the ratio of number of songs of Mukesh that have captured the interest of listeners, and are listed as “good quality” favorites, is probably much higher than the other main line singers, who have shared more or less the same timelines as career contemporaries.

That, is then the curious quality of the singing of this soulful voice. There have been references – some music directors did not consider him good enough. At time he himself did not consider himself good enough. And yet, despite being a singer of one and two songs in most of his films, there is a something special that he injects into the rendition, that makes the song memorable. The sound of his singing has a golden ring of sincerity, as if the voice is coming from his soul and not just from his lungs. Pick up any listing of his songs; I daresay you would be hard pressed to drop un-likeable non-favorites from that list.

I would agree with this perspective and this explanation given by Nalin ji. Yes, definitely, there is that something compellingly charismatic in this voice.

Yes, known and liked better for his poignant and sad renditions – Raja ji has rightly observed that such songs of Mukesh serve as a soothening balm to a troubled mind, there are some so well known charmingly fast paced fun songs that he has rendered. Today’s song belongs to that fast paced fun category. The film is ‘Mehndi Lagi Mere Haath’ from 1962. The words are written by Anand Bakshi and the music is from the baton of Kalyanji Anandji. Yet one more charming rendition from this voice that never ceases to amaze.

As we celebrate seven decades of freedom, patriotic songs continue to eulogize the glories of our nation. These songs have always had a special place in the hearts of all Indians. During the good old days of DD, many such songs were played throughout the day on such occasions. One of the very common songs that was invariably played was the Mukesh number “Chhodo Kal Ki Baaten” from the film ‘Hum Hindustani’ (1960). Coming from the baton of Usha Khanna in her second film as a composer, the song was sung with much gusto by Mukesh. The other famous song by Mukesh in this genre is obviously the title song from ‘Jis Desh Mein Ganga Behti Hai’ (1960).

However a lesser known fact is that Mukesh sang nearly 20 film and non-film patriotic songs. The very first duet that Mukesh sang with Lata Mangeshkar – “Ab Darne Ki Koi Baat Nahin Hai” (from ‘Majboor’, 1948) as well as GeetaDutt – “Watan Ki Maati Haath Mein Le Kar” (from ‘Gaon’, 1947), are both patriotic songs.

Amongst his other patriotic songs, Atulji posted “Na Koi Raha Hai Na Koi Rahege” (from ‘Johar Mehmood in Goa’, 1965) a few weeks back.

The iconic song “Mera Rang De Basanti Chola” has been sung by many singers at different times. Mukesh too is involved in one of the versions from the film Shaheed (1965) which he sings along with Mahendra Kapoor, and Rajendra Mehta.

There are about a dozen more songs of Mukesh in the patriotic category and quite a few of them are yet to be posted. Since the list may not be complete and also as the other songs are not too well known, I will desist myself from making a list of all his patriotic songs at this stage.

However, as a regular feature in this series, a tabular column is always in order. Following is the list of the songs composed by Ram Ganguly, and sung by Mukesh.

Aag (1948). As we are all well aware, this was the directorial debut of Raj Kapoor and Ram Ganguly had scored the music for the film. Some misunderstanding between the director and the composer resulted in a phenomenon called Shanker-Jaikishen. Rest as they say, is history.

Personally, for me, the music of ‘Aag’ is altogether on a different platform. There is something captivating in the compositions. I often listen to the songs from this movie, each time savouring the music.

The career of Ram Ganguly after ‘Aag’ was not a smooth ride. There were hardly any films that were musically successful. I was wondering if any of our more knowledgeable contributors have written a post on the life and career of the composer. And as expected, I found this post, aptly written by one of the most suitable persons to do so.

The two most famous songs of Ram Ganguly after his ‘Aag’ score are probably from ‘Gawaiyya’ (1954). The songs Aise Toote Taar Ke Mere Geet Adhoore Reh Gaye and Teri Yaad Ka Deepak Jaltaa Hai, once again bring to mind the velvet voiced memories of Talat Mehmood.

Coming to this post and the song in particular, it is a recently discovered song as it is not listed in Mukesh Geet Kosh. It is listed in the main Hindi Film Geet Kosh, but at the time of publication of volume 2 of HFGK, the detailed information of this song was not available. A patriotic song sung by Mukesh along with chorus, the song was recorded for ‘Jalsa’ (1948). From the Geet Kosh listings, it seems that a song with the same or a similar title is also included in the film ‘Desh Sewa’, also from 1948. I request for more clarifications and details about this re-use of the song by more knowledgeable readers.

It seems Ram Ganguly too did not use the voice of Mukesh in any of his films after ‘Jalsa’. The tally stands at 04 as listed above. There are some 18 songs in Jalsa (1948). One song has already been represented on the blog. It will be nothing short of a miracle if any of the remaining songs from Jalsa have the voice of Mukesh as he was one of the most sought-after playback singers during the time.

A song recorded and composed by Roshan in 1950, was the topic of discussion on a TV program nearly 5 decades later. The singer (judge on the show) was requested by none other than Anil Biswas, to sing a few lines of the famous song. The specific reference was to the word “ib” in the song “Sun Bairi Balam Sach Bol Re Ib Kyaa Hoga” from ‘Bawre Nain’ (1950). She rendered the song in an effortless manner without any background music. It is difficult to believe that she could sing so well at the spur of the moment.

Her career was cut short for various reasons. She has given quite a few interviews and when asked to sing few lines was always so very melodious in spite of her old age. Yes, I am talking about Rajkumari Dubey.

Many singers such as Suraiyya, Shamshad Begum, Amirbai Karnataki, Geeta Dutt et al may not be the most favourite singer of music lovers. But, there is no doubt whatsoever that such singers are always held in high esteem, because, whatever few songs they sang, remain classic, as most of them were sung in the golden era when music was given utmost importance. Rajkumari for sure is one such gifted singer.

Of the many songs sung by her and liked by me, “Main Wo Dulhan Hoon Raas Na Aaya Jise Singaar” from ‘Mahal’ (1949) tops the list. Rajkumari has sung quite a few memorable songs in the film, but the tsunami caused by Lata with her solos, unfortunately never allowed Rajkumari to come to the fore.

For this post, I bring to the readers, her duets with Mukesh. There are 8 of them in total as listed below and also confirmed by Shri Harish Raghuwanshi ji. I am thankful to him for his ever-ready attitude to help me with this series.

7 out of the 8 songs are already posted on the blog. I have given the respective links of the 7 songs in the table, in case anyone wants to enjoy all the songs of the two singers. It’s interesting to note, that out of the 8 songs, 4 have been composed by Snehal Bhatkar and as many as 5 written by Kidar Sharma.

Again, I suppose, it’s the duet from ‘Bawre Nain’ (1950), which most people would remember, and associate with this pair of singers. There is excellent restraint and comfort amongst the singers in delivering this duet. It is definitely one of the first question-answer type of songs. But then, I cannot confirm if it’s the very first.

The duets from ‘Thhes’ (1949) are also often played on Radio Ceylon. I am very fond of Ghulam Mohammed’s compositions and the one from ‘Hanste Aansoo’ (1950) is a personal favourite. Needless to say and as often said in this series, the numbers could have been much more. But unfortunately, we find that the duets of Mukesh with such vintage era singers do not even touch the two figure mark.

Today’s duet is of a more recent discovery in the sense that it does not figure in Mukesh Geet Kosh. Two songs from this film ‘Ram Darshan’ (1950) have been posted on the blog. Both the songs are solos sung by Mukesh and posted by our Sudhir ji.

There are some 16 songs in this film. With this post, 3 of them will be posted. A couple of more songs from the movie (one sung by Manna Dey) are available on the internet. So out of the remaining 10-11 songs, are there any other Mukesh numbers that are yet to be traced? Even though it seems very unlikely, anything new discovered pertaining to the voice of Mukesh will always be welcome news. Interestingly, Cineplot website has not included the duet of this post, but speaks of another song from the film titled “Ram Ram Ram Ram…Ho Moree Mann”. I have sought clarifications or any other info which Shri Harish ji may be having and will keep the feedback posted.

Here is the third song from the movie to be posted on the blog; a duet which Mukesh has sung with Rajkumari. My next short post will be on 27th August and will be a stand-alone song (not featuring in either of my two series).

[Ed Note: In my opinion, Cineplot has correctly identified this song, as the song no. 7 listed for this film, in the Geet Kosh. Clearly, at the time of publication of volume 2 of the Geet Kosh, the information about the singers of this song was not available. And hence, this song did not get included in the Mukesh Geet Kosh. Later, when the actual gramophone record of this song was traced, the voices of the singers were identified. But it also created a discrepancy, regarding the leading lines of this song. The song, as heard on the gramophone record, starts with the words “rooth gayo ri mero shyam“. Whereas the song listed in the Geet Kosh starts with the words “Ram – 8, Ho Morey Mann Kab Sumroge Ram, Rooth Gayo Ri”.

As we scan the lyrics of the song, we find that the line “Ho Morey Mann Kab Sumroge Ram” appears almost midway in the song, in the voice of Mukesh. That gives us a clue. It is likely that the song as appearing in the film, (and also as listed in the information booklet of the film) starts in the voice of Mukesh, uttering the name of Lord Ram, and then saying the line “Ho Morey Mann Kab Sumroge Ram”. Then the voice of Rajkumari takes over with the words “Rooth Gayo Ri. . .”. However, on the gramophone record, the leading words in the voice of Mukesh have been omitted, and the song starts directly with the lines sung by Rajkumari. It is clear from the words in the song that the male protagonist has gone away seeking solace in the name of Lord Ram, in his quest for ‘Ram Darshan’. The female protagonist is obviously waiting and pining for him to come back. The male person is seeking Lord Ram, and the female person is seeking her beloved, using the name of Shyam (Lord Krishna).

If we agree with this explanation, then the music director for this song is identified as the duo of Rij Ram-Balmukand. As I scan the songs posted on the blog, I find that this the first time this music director’s name is appearing here. So this is a debut song for this music director duo. I request our more knowledgeable readers to please add more information about this music director duo.]

Today is the remembrance day of legendary singer Mukesh. (23 July 1922 to 27 August 1976).

“Each word from his lips was a pearl. No one could sing the way Mukesh did, with the right diction, inflexion and intonation. His vocal timbre was out of this world.”

These are the words of composer Salil Choudhary in praise of the voice of Mukesh.

There are many die-hard fans of Mukesh and his tribe swears by him. To hear his voice, is to understand the world around us in its purest form. For his voice represents truth, purity, honesty and it was sung straight from the deepest portions of his heart. A soothing voice to the disheartened, God’s own voice in his bhajans, optimism in his patriotic songs, true love in romantic numbers, and moreover the voice of the greatest showman our country has ever seen, the voice of Mukesh will remain an inseparable chapter in the annals of HFM.

Jaane Kahaan Gaye Wo Din” (‘Mera Naam Joker’, 1970) was sung as if a lifeless body was screeching for the injustices it had been subjected to. The more one hears this song in solitary confinements, the more one wonders how a playback singer could emulate the character with such authentic despondency.

Dost Dost Na Raha” (‘Sangam’, 1964) portrays the entire film in 3 minutes. It’s the voice which gives potency to the emotional expressions of all the three characters involved.

Listen to “Ramaiyya Vastavaiya” (‘Shri 420’, 1955) and “Dil Ne Phir Yaad Kiya” (‘Dil Ne Phir Yaad Kiya’, 1966). The voice that appears late in the songs, makes one to sit up and take notice.

Kisi Ki Muskuraahaton Pe Ho Nisar” (‘Anaari’, 1959) , “Haal e Dil Hamara” (‘Shriman Satyawadi’, 1960),  and “Chhodo Kal Ki Baaten Kal Ki Baat Puraani” (‘Hum Hindustani’, 1960) etc. brim with confidence and instil optimism in the minds of the listeners.

Kahin Door Jab Din Dhal Jaaye” (‘Anand’, 1970) explains the loneliness of the actor, even though the whole film is about his lively nature and knowing very well that it’s the dusk of his life.

It would not be an exaggeration to say for the film ‘Kabhi Kabhie’ (1976), the title song sung by Mukesh is what continues to remain in public memory after all these years.

OP Nayyar, who used Mukesh sparingly, just for less than half a dozen songs, reluctantly gave his only solo to the singer in ‘Sambandh’ (1969) for a background song during the rolling of titles. Today, what remains of the film is the song “Chal Akela, Chal Akela, Chal Akela”.

The list of such impeccable playback sounds rendered to the character’s portrayal on the screen is quite long and almost seems to be endless. Each song, a perfect gem, sung with utmost sincerity and humility.

Today, I bring to the music lovers, a NFS, again the voice articulating melancholy, the virtue for which Mukesh will remain unforgettable.

This post celebrates the 1000th song of Majrooh Sultanpuri on our blog.

Powerful lines, written while he was in prison – no, not under the British rule; that happened back in 1946-47. This was a second time he was imprisoned c1950-51, under the regime of a free India. A poet with leftist leanings, his progressive writings were considered a threat by the British regime (which is understandable), and also considered a threat by then government of Morarji Desai (in Bombay). A song titled ‘Aman Ka Jhanda’ was sung at a meeting of poor labor class workers in the Parel area. Being the author, and the on stage presenter of this song, drew the ire of the establishment, and arrest warrants were issued in his name. He was arrested after being underground for some time, and sentenced to one year imprisonment. Morarji Desai suggested that he may render an apology for his writings, and he would be a free man. In response, the young revolutionary poet wrote this couplet.

Remembering Majrooh Sb on the 98th anniversary of his birth today (1st October).

When born in 1919, he was named Asraar ul Hasan Khan. His father, who worked in the Police department, wanted him to have the traditional education, and learn to be a doctor. The young Asraar studied at the traditional Masrasa, and took up Unaani medicine, to become a ‘hakeem’. These are efforts made by the worldly wise in the family, to get the young man settled in life. But the voice of the revolutionary poet turned to be more strong and it was his shaayari that ascended to claim his life to be its own. Influenced and encouraged by the stalwarts of his era, namely Faiz, Majaaz and Jigar Moradabaadi, he found himself to be much more at home in mushairas and gatherings of writers. He came to Bombay to participate in one such gathering of poets. AR Kardar was present at this mushaira. The impressions made led to a meeting between Kardar, Naushad and this young poet. The outcome was the songs of the film ‘Shahjehan’. The rest, as is often said, is history.

The innings lasted for five and a half decades, probably the longest inning by a songwriter in the Hindi film industry. The body of work consists of more than 2300 songs written for almost 350 films over a period of 55 years. Songs that have entertained generation after generation of movie buffs and radio listeners. The longevity and the creativity can be gauged from the popularity of his writings at the two ends of this long 55 year spectrum. At one end of this spectrum are gems like “Yun To Aapas Mein Bigadte Hain Khafaa Hotey Hain” (‘Andaaz’, 1949) and “Sun Sun Sun Sun Zaalima. . .” (‘Aar Paar’, 1954), and at the other end are the contemporary innovative hits like “Baahon Ke Darmiaan. . .” (‘Khamoshi – The Musical’, 1996) and “Ae, Kya Bolti Tu. . . Aati Kya Khandaala” (‘Ghulam’, 1998). And in between these two ends are crammed a couple of thousand popular hit songs across the decades, that cannot be justifiably dealt with in a single article.

Romanticism apart, the writings of Majrooh touch upon the variety of human sentiments, and have carried an attraction that has appealed to generations. His creativity and his touch of the current in-vogue sentimentalism made him a successful partner of four generations of music directors from Naushad and Ghulam Mohammed all the way to Jatin-Lalit and AR Rahman. That is a prowess and a success that probably no other songwriter in the industry can lay a claim to.

For today’s celebration, I have picked this Mukesh – Usha Mangeshkar duet from the 1966 film ‘Mere Lal’. The music is created by the duo of Laxmikant Pyaarelal. Another significant reason to celebrate today’s anniversary is that we are on the 1,000th post of Majrooh Sb’s songs on our blog. Back in 1993, Majrooh Sb became the first songwriter in the film industry to be honored with the coveted Dada Saheb Phalke Award. And today, he becomes the first songwriter to breach the 1000th milestone on our blog.
[Note: Rajinder Krishan is very close, also in the 990s. The next closest is Anand Bakshi, still a little further behind at 875.]

Today’s song is a roadside tamasha song, as we see a roving entertainer with his trained monkey’s act, present a performance to the roadside public. And now we have a film song to go along with it. 🙂 The singing voices are of Mukesh and Usha Mangeshkar. The latter is singing for assistant of the lead performer.

In the video clip, we hear two antaraas. However, the longer more complete song is available as an audio clip only. Also, the Geet Kosh lists this song twice, and apparently, the second reprise of the song in the film is a solo sung by Usha Mangeshkar. This reprise has only one antaraa, which is a repeat of the first antaraa of the main part of this song. The lyrics noted are based on the longer audio version of the song.

I request the more knowledgeable readers to help identify this performer duo who enact this song on screen.

Note: Avinash ji informs us that the young assistant lip syncing the voice of Usha Mangeshkar, is Mahesh Kothare, who was later active in the Marathi film industry as an actor, producer and director.

I am trying to wish two people on their birthday with this one post.

Yesterday, 15th October was the birth anniversary of Shankar Singh of the Shankar-Jaikishan duo.

He was born in Hyderabad in 1922 which means he would have been 95. He started his career with a theatre group before shifting to Prithvi Theatre. That is where he learnt to play the Tabla, and several other instruments like the Sitar, Accordion and Piano. Besides his work at Prithvi he also started working as assistant to Husnlal Bhagatram and nurtured ambitionof becoming an independent music director.He met a struggling Jaikishan Panchal, a harmonium player, outside the office of a Gujarati film director and instantly offered him a job at Prithvi without even consulting Prithviraj Kapoor. But Prithviraj honoured Shankar’s word and appointed Jaikishan as the Harmonium player of Prithvi Theatre.

It was here that they got to know Raj Kapoor and when Raj Kapoor debuted as director in 1948 with “Aag”. Ram Ganguly was the music director and Shankar and Jaikishan were the assistants. For RK’s “Barsaat”. Raj Kapoor took Shankar as the music director who insisted that on taking Jaikishan as partner and history was made. Their filmography contains a wide range of music that made Bollywood history. It has music of all genres. And they continued as a team till the untimely death of Jaikishan in 1971. But even after 1971 all the music composed by Shankar was credited to the duo. But today’s song is from a 1975 film so definitely it has to be a Shankar creation.

The second person who is being wished with this song is my childhood favourite. She is another of the persons whose appearance on the small screen makes me stop in my tracks/ chores even today. I was floored by her beauty from the first time I set my eyes on her in 1971/72. And am amazed at how she has managed to maintain herself even today as turns 69 today- cannot believe she is 69!!! Does not look it at all!!! Probably it is her constant riyaaz of dance- she is a classical dancer- that is the secret behind her looks.

She has been the darling of the audiences from her first Bollywood debut opposite Raj Kapoor in 1968. (she first faced the camera at 15 for Tamil film “Ithu Sathiyam” as a dancer and supporting actress). Now I know all the followers of this blog have understood that I am talking of my Basanti alias Hema Malini. And just so that this post doesn’t become very long I am not going to list all of my favourite Hema Malini films here. Neither am I going to list all her co-stars here. Nor am I giving a list of her songs which have been playing inside my head since morning. 😉

Let us get to the song straight away. It is from Sohanlal Kanwar’s “Sanyasi” (1975). The song is sung by Mukesh and Lata Mangeshkar. It is written by Vithalbhai Patel.

A strange coincidence the two people whose birthday is being celebrated with this song -both had their Bollywood debut with Raj Kapoor.

Personally I think that now a days we are much better off vis a vis the situation of 1970s. Those were the days when we had economic policies that relied upon dole contributed by western nations. Things are vastly better today. The economic policies which kept the nation poor and steadily brought it on the verge of bankruptcy have since been abandoned. Politicians continue to be more or less same as before but the country is doing far better. So people listening to this song today will not share the same despondency as this song may have brought about in the past.

With this song, “Sankalp”(1974) joins the list of movies that have all their songs covered in the blog.

Just few days back I came across this song that I am presenting today. After listening to it I was feeling like maybe I had heard it on ‘radio’ many many years back. When I listened to it once I just kept listening to it again and again and with every new day this song is growing on me, on and on. The song is from the 1978 movie ‘Pal Do Pal Ka Saath’ and it is sung by Mukesh ji.

‘Pal Do Pal Ka Saath’ was directed by BR Ishara for Kaveri Films, Bombay. The cast of actors includes Shekhar Kapoor, Rama Vij, Shamli (New Discovery), Asit Sen, Paintal, Johny Whisky, Aarti, Tiger, Mishri Lal, Mohammad Ali, Amal Sen, Narayan Gwalani, Hameed, Sitaram, Jasbir, Prakash Joshi, Vijay Nangia, Bhaiyalal Sharma, Kashi Prasad Chaurasia and others.

This movie has four songs penned by Naqsh Lyallpuri, Yogesh, Balkavi Bairagi and Dev Kohli. Music for this movie is composed by Shyam Saagar. One song from this movie had been posted on the blog earlier in 2014 i.e. four years back and it was introduced by Sudhir ji – ‘Chupke Se Peechhe Se Aa Ke’ sung by Rafi Saab and lyrics of this song are by Dev Kohli.

As mentioned by Sudhir ji in his post this movie seems to be an ‘obscure movie’ though it contains ‘gems of songs’ (‘veritable gems’ as Sudhir ji has mentioned in his post) as we can say for the earlier song and the today’s song after listening to them. I don’t remember to have heard about this movie earlier and not gone through its information before. It was only after listening to the today’s song that I searched for its details in HFGK Vol V and also read the earlier post on the blog. This movie was passed by censor board on 07.04.1978.

Almost forty years have passed since the movie and its music had been created, however listening to its songs revives the memories of the music of those years and Mukesh ji’s singing of the many other songs for Yogesh ji. Yes, today’s song is penned by Yogesh.

Since the movie was an obscure movie I think its songs were also forgotten easily. I am not able to locate online, the other two songs of this film. As per Geet Kosh, these are solo songs in the voices of Asha Bhosle and Manna Dey. We have to search for them and need to bring them here for our listening pleasure. Till then let us listen to this wonderful composition of Shyam Saagar and savour the magic Yogesh ji’s words and Mukesh ji’s singing…

The song with this post was liked by my mother at the time when it was a regular on the radio waves. Specially the lines about aate mein mitti, chaawal mein kankar behisaab hai. I suppose those were the times when people had to rely on groceries from ration-shops (kids of the new millennium will not know what the fuss is all about). I remember people used to stand in queues to buy common things like soaps, oils, and other essentials. Aah! Those were different times and a different way of living.

The song with this post also reminds me of the discussion we had on the blog when the song Sun-Saahiba-Sun-Pyaar-Ki-Dhun/from ‘Ram Teri Ganga Maili’ (1986) was posted; about how Raj Kapoor used some of Hasrat Jaipuri’s lyrics in some of the movies he acted in post 1970. The sources that I referred to before writing this post gives credit to both Ravindra Jain and Hasrat Jaipuri for this song. We have knowledgeable followers of the blog who will enlighten us further on this.

A thought crossed my mind as I sat through the video of this song – if we see Rishi Kapoor on-screen these days it feels like we are seeing Raj Kapoor. The thought got confirmed recently after I saw ‘102 Not Out’ (2018) where Rishi plays a 75-year-old adorable, easily-irritable old man. I had to see the movie – how could I not see an Amitabh Bachchan – Rishi Kapoor movie :). Nice movie should be seen at least once.

With this post we remember the original showman of Bollywood – Raj Kapoor- on his 30th death anniversary. I remember reading about his demise in the newspaper on 3rd or 4th June – there were no instant messaging systems then and getting news about happenings in Mumbai, in local newspapers in Tamil Nadu (I had just begun my married life in a small town of TN that day) was generally a day or two late – different times and a different way of living.

Raj Kapoor had been conferred the Dadasaheb Phalke award that year. I remember seeing the event live on Doordarshan when he was assisted on to the stage. He collapsed at the event and was rushed to AIIMS New Delhi where he passed away almost a month later due to complications arising from his asthma. But his legacy lives in the form of his work as an actor, producer and director. His movies had great music and songs with meaningful lyrics. Whether it was “Sajan Re Jhooth Mat Bolo Khuda Ke Paas Jaana Hai” or “Ik Din Bik Jaayega Maati Ke Mol” – his songs conveyed truths of life. He spoke of the life of the common man in ‘Dil Ka Haal Suney Dilwaala‘  and of eternal love in “Main Na Rahoongi Tum Na Rahoge Phir Bhi Rahengi Nishaaniyan“. His songs had a worldwide appeal; it is said that his “Awaara Hoon” is remembered even today in Russia. What more do I say about this legend, it will be “chota munh aur badi baat”.

Let us get on to the song of the day. It is from the 1975 Naresh Kumar produced and directed ‘Do Jaasoos’. Raj Kapoor along with Rajendra Kumar played detectives out to trace a millionaire’s daughter and, in the process, catch a gang of smugglers led by Prem Chopra. Singer Shailendra Singh made his acting debut in this movie. Hasrat Jaipuri and Ravindra Jain are credited as lyricists and Jain was also the music director. Today’s song is in the voice of Mukesh and Rafi. Raj Kapoor considered Mukesh his singing voiceand Rafi was the chosen voice for Rajendra Kumar on a majority of occasions. The song is a take on the state of the nation at that point of time, but I think it is still relevant.

“Man Tera Tan Mera”(1971) was directed by B R Ishara for Nitin Films, Bombay. This “social” movie had Rehana Sultan, Anil Dhawan, Shatrughan Sinha, Manmohan Krishna, Asit Sen, Dulaari, Vivek, Johny Whisky, Dilip Dutt, Pardesi, Nayantara, Abhijeet Sen, Ravi, Roopaali, Hameed, Shakeel, Madhumati, Anand Narula, S K Sinha, M abbas, C K Shetty, Ram Singh, Prakash, Satyendra, Jeetendra Sharma, R Khosla, Master Susheel, Rashmi (new discovery) and Rukhsana (new discovery) etc in it.

The movie had four songs in it. One song has been covered in the past.

Here is the second song from “Man Tera Tan Mera”(1971) to appear in the blog. The song is sung by Mukesh. Naqsh Llayalpuri is the lyricist. Music is composed by Sapan Jagmohan.

Only the audio of this song is available. Like most Mukesh songs, this song too bears the mdas touch of Mukesh, but this song somehow managed to end up becoming an obscure song. The fact that the movie failed at the box office obviously has to be the main reason why this song failed to get enough exposure among music lovers.

The excitement surrounding the 10th anniversary has not yet subsided. We are awaiting posts from a few regulars, hope they don’t hide behind the excuse of laziness and other similar reasons 🙂

22nd July is the 95th birth anniversary of Mukesh Chand Mathur better known the world over as Mukesh; the man who was the voice of Raj Kapoor (mostly), Dilip Kumar, Feroz Khan, Manoj Kumar, Sunil Dutt etc.

He was born in Delhi to Zorawar Chand Mathur and Chand Rani. The music teacher who came home to teach his sister found a pupil in Mukesh who would listen from the adjoining room. His voice was first noticed by Motilal, a distant relative, when he sang at his sister’s wedding. Motilal took him to Mumbai and arranged for music lessons with Pandit Jagannath Prasad. During this period Mukesh was offered a role as an actor-singer in a Hindi film, “Nirdosh” (1941). His first song was “Dil Hi Bujha Hua Ho Toh” as an actor-singer for “Nirdosh”. He got his break as a playback singer for actor Motilal in 1945 with the film Pehli Nazar with music composed by Anil Biswas and lyrics written by Aah Sitapuri (would like to know more about him).
The first song that Mukesh sang for a Hindi film was “Dil Jalta Hai To Jalne De”. He was a Saigal fan (I don’t know of many who were not a fan of Saigal) and used to imitate his idol. It is said that when Saigal first heard the song “Dil Jalta Hai To Jalne De” he is said to have remarked, “I don’t recall singing this song.”

Naushad Ali helped him form his own style and before he became voice of Raj Kapoor he had a string of hits with Dilip Kumar in “Mela”, “Andaz”, “Anokhi Ada” etc. His other hits with Dilip Kumar were “Anokha Pyar” with Anil Biswas, “Madhumati” with Salil Choudhary, “Yahudi” with Shankar Jaikishan etc.

Mukesh recorded about 130 songs for Shankar- Jaikishan followed by Kalyanji Anandji. A few years back I had gone to an “Anandji Nite” and was drowned in songs by Mukesh; though there were a few Manna Dey and Kishore Kumar songs too in that program but the number of songs of Mukesh were more. (but I have no complaints, I enjoyed myself)

Many of his songs are still popular and “kai baar yu bhi dekha hain, yeh jo man ki seema rekha hain” from Rajnigandha got him a National Award for Best Playback Singer for the year 1973. His Filmfare Awards were for “Sab kuch seekha humne” Anari, 1959; “Sabse bada nadaan wahi hai” Pehchan, 1970; “Jai bolo beimaan ki” Be-imaan, 1972; and “Kabhi kabhie mere dil mein” Kabhi Kabhie, 1976.

He complained of chest pain when on a tour to the USA, was rushed to a hospital but was pronounced dead. Lata Mangeshkar completed the concert with his son Nitin Mukesh and bought the body home where a grand funeral was held. On getting the news of his death Raj Kapoor is said to have burst into tears and remarked “I Have lost my Voice.”

Many of his songs were released after his death. “Dharam Veer”; “Amar Akbar Anthony”; “Khel Khiladi Ka”; “Darinda” and “Chandi Sona” in 1977 & in 1978 “Aahuti”, “Paramatma”, “Tumhari Kasam” and “Satyam Shivam Sundaram”. His last known release was for the movie Chand Grahan in 1997 a good twenty years after he went away.

The song with this post is one which was very popular in its times and is still heard on AIR’s Vividh Bharati. It was written by Anand Bakshi who would have turned 88 on 21st July. (Today I am not writing anything about how much I love his work) He wrote it for “Aahuti” which was a movie with a standard storyline, made extremely popular by Manmohan Desai’s movies and B. R. Chopra’s “Waqt” – meaning the movie was a story of a family which gets separated at the start of the movie and reunites before the climax :). The movie had a star cast headed by Rajendra Kumar, Shashi Kapoor, Rakesh Roshan, Parveen Babi, Zaheera, Asha Sachdev and Ajit heading the supporting cast. The movie had five songs one of which “kash aisa hota” has been posted. Today’s song is courtesy Avinashji who was generous enough to send me the lyrics which he had written out back in 2013. Remembering Mukesh on his birthday (22 July 1923 – 27 August 1976)

Mukesh singing for Bappi Lahari is bound to raise eyebrows for the simple reason that the two artists worked in two different periods of time.
However, when Bappida started his hindi music journey in the beginning of the 70s, Mukesh was still giving playback. His first score for hindi movies was for the film Nanha Shikari (1973) and incidentally his first composition featured Mukesh. This was a pleasant surprise for me, when I was going through some articles on Bappida. For his fans here is his official website.

Coming to the next part of this series and after a long time, here is the short collaboration of Mukesh singing for Bappida. (The post itself is even shorter ) 🙂

There are only two songs; a duet with Sushma Shrestha in Nanha Shikari (1973) and a solo from Bazaar Band Karo (1974) which I present in this post.

“Bazaar Band Karo” is a 1974 Bollywood film produced and directed by B. R. Ishara and starring Manhar Desai and Asha Chandra. One song from the film is already posted on the blog and this is the second out of the four songs from the movie.

The bidaai song immediately reminds us of one of the most famous songs in this genre, the one from S. D Burman’s Bambai ka Babu’s iconic song Chal ri sajni ab kyaa soche(Bambai ka babu) sung by Mukesh himself.

A sort collaboration and an even sorter post, but the memories and the melodies of the singer are too many.

Mukesh and his Composers – 16

Today 27 August, we remember Mukesh on his remembrance day.

My last post on his birthday (22 July) was about his collaboration with Bappi Lahiri. We remain with the Lahiri family in this post too as we discuss the songs sung by Mukesh for Bappi Da’s father Aparesh Lahiri.

There are probably more songs sung by Aparesh Lahiri than the films that he composed music for.

Not much information is available on the net and I request knowledgeable readers to write more on his composing career. From the little information, I could gather in connection with this post, I came across a Bengali film named Subhash Chandra (1966). Needless to say it is based on the life and times of one of the most adored and respected freedom fighters of India, Subhash Chandra Bose.

The film in Bengali language seems to have been quite popular from what I could understand. Mukesh who has sung about a dozen Bengali songs has one song in this 1966 particular film too. The same film was made in Hindi and seems to have disappeared without much popularity. In the Hindi version too, Mukesh has sung the same song with the same tune as the Bengali version.
[Ed Note: As per the Geet Kosh, the Hindi version of this film was released in 1978.]

This is the solitary song sung by Mukesh for Aparesh Lahiri and hence there will be no table in this post. 🙂

Evidently, there has not been much research by me in this post and I apologize for the same. However the details were sketchy and since it was the only sung by Mukesh for the said composer, I did not dig much into the career of Aparesh Lahiri.

Much of these details were provided to me by Shri Harish Raghuwanshi and I am thankful to him.

Before I conclude the post, I would like to repeat what a few noted and eminent personalities have said about Mukesh.

Salil Chowdhury: Each word from his lips was a pearl. No one could sing the way Mukesh did, with the right diction, inflexion and intonation. His vocal timbre was out of this world.

Raj Kapoor: I am just a body, Mukesh is my soul.

Anil Biswas: I have lost my son. (on Mukesh’s passing away)

Needless to say, the above quotes speak volumes about Mukesh; the man with the golden voice, playback singer par excellence and the noble soul.

The voice of Mukesh will forever continue to resonate in the world of music.

27th August – a traveling tour, a distant land, and an unexpected loss; a loss that is as numbing even today, as shattering as it was when it happened then. 1976, and a hotel in Detroit, USA. The soul of the voice and the voice of the soul – both were stilled forever. A life of just 53 years. And a singing career that was wonderfully placed. Both cut short by the matters of the heart – matters that could not be set right.

Today, we remember Mukesh, through his songs, in an effort to re-live the times. And to enjoy the listening pleasure that this voice still continues to be forty two years after his departure.

Mahesh ji’s wonderful selection “Yahaan Radha Kund Hai Shyam Kund Hai” from an obscure film ‘Subhash Chandra’ has already posted earlier in the day today. Here is one more song in the memory of this soulful voice.

The film is ‘Aayega Aanewaala’ from 1967. This film is produced and directed by Kewal Misra for his home company, Kewal Productions, Bombay. The list of actors reads as follows – Kumkum, Sanjeev Kumar, Sabita Chatterjee, Ram Mohan, Kundan, Rajan Haksar, Chaman Puri, Uma Khosla, Ravi Khanna, Bela Bose, Khairati, and Agha.

There are six songs in this film, all written by Naqsh Lyallpuri, and the music is composed by the duo of Sapan Jagmohan. One song of this film has already been posted here. This is the second song coming on board.

The filming location for this song is Simla (in Himachal Pradesh) – a very scenic and a popular vacation resort, right from the pre-independence days. The song is picturized as what appears to be a picnic song. Sanjeev Kumrar is wooing and teasing Kum Kum, telling her that he is a seasoned player, and that he is not easily perturbed.

The song is a lively, playful song. In the voice of Mukesh, it becomes more endearing. The voice suits all types of emotions – even naughty playfulness. Listen and enjoy.

Mukesh and his Composers – 17

We have discussed the songs sung by Mukesh for Aparesh Lahiri and his son Bappi Lahiri in the last two successive posts. Incidentally these two posts were on the birth and death anniversary dates of Mukesh.
Much earlier in the series, we have also discussed about Mukesh songs for S D Burman and R D Burman. Well, no prizes for guessing where we are heading with these discussions. Yes, the father-son associations that Mukesh had in his singing career and the name that came immediately to my mind was that of Rajesh Roshan. It appears that Mukesh’s association with father-son composers is restricted to the three duos discussed above. I found it prudent to have this short table of the details before we head to the composer of this post Rajesh Roshan.

It is pointless, for obvious reasons to discuss the above table in totality, but we cannot help noticing that Roshan songs for Mukesh are more than all the other 5 composers put together.

In the above table, all songs of all composers are represented on the blog except one under Rajesh Roshan which is being introduced with this post. And, one song under R D Burman from Naukri (1978) is yet to be represented.

R D Burman started his composing career in 1961 and took Mukesh onboard only in 1965. Thereafter he had 14 more songs by Mukesh all in the 70”s and with quite a number of them being hits. To reiterate he composed 15 songs for Mukesh as against 12 by his father who had first composed for Mukesh way back in 1948.

Coming to the today’s post, Rajesh Roshan began his composing career only in 1974 and started with a bang with Kishore Kumar in Kunwaara Baap and Julie in 74 and 75 respectively. 76 was the year in which Mukesh passed away and we have only 3 songs that Mukesh sang for Rajesh Roshan and two of the movies were released after Mukesh had left this world.

Below is table of the short list of 3 songs with all the details. Needless to say, all 3 songs were famous and in particular the one from Tumhaari Kasam remains active in public memory to this day.

Tumhaari Kasam had Jeetrendra in the lead role, but the duet sung by Mukesh with Asha Bhosle was featured on Navin Nischol. The film was released two years after Mukesh passed away and yet it’s the only notable feature left of the film today. The tune is quite catchy and is a personal favourite of mine.

Charandas was released in 1977 and it makes a debut on the blog with this last of the 3 songs of Mukesh sung for Rajesh Roshan. The song is sung on screen by Om Prakash who seems to be the protagonist in the film.

Season’s greetings and best wishes to all for the Navratri Festival starting today (10 october 2018)!!!

I have mentioned in a few of my earlier write-ups that festivals too bring back many memories and they in turn bring back memories of songs which we have heard years before… in my case ‘years before’ generally means ‘in my childhood days or in those years when I was growing’ 🙂

Today’s song is one such song which normally comes to my mind during celebration of the ‘Navratri festival’ every year. I was under impression that this song must have been posted on the blog earlier, however much to my surprise, this song is mot yet covered till now. And that gives me this opportunity to share this song today on the blog.

I vaguely remember that in our colony where we were staying then (for me after my birth in 1968 to 1984 when I was in eleventh standard :)) during Navratri Festival or Durga Pooja Festival the Durga Pooja Idol would be worshipped in the Colony Club or special ‘pandals’ arranged near the ‘Club Building’ and the ‘Stage’ (meant for the various programs held during the festival). However, unlike the ‘Ganpati Festival’ during which various ‘cultural programs’ would be held, during ‘Navratri’ it was mostly the staging of ‘Ramleela’ for nine/ten days.

I do not have any more special memories except a few songs that were played on the loud speakers and the “Ramleela” which I vaguely remember. Ttoday’s song is one such song that was frequently played on loud speakers during this festival and had been lying dormant in my memories since then.

The song that I am going to present today is from the ‘1971’ movie ‘Johar Mehmood in Hong Kong’.
Going by the date of passing of this movie by the Censor Board I was almost three years old then, when the movie was released. Johar whenever he combined with Mehmood in movies and Mehmood specially for his movies were always a point of discussion among the elders in the family. I remember watching ‘Johar Mehmood in Goa’ and ‘Johar Mehmood in Hong Kong’ with my Uncles. I do not remember if I also watched ‘Johar Mehmood in Kashmir’. These movies had good songs or good entertaining songs, so the songs were also not easily forgettable given their performances on these songs.

“Johar Mehmood in Hongkong” (1971) was produced by Madan Chopra and K.Z. Sheth. It was directed by S.A. Akbar.

It was M.O. Bawazir’s presentation for Mahesh Ashish.

The movie had I.S. Johar, Mehmood, Sonia Sahni, Aruna Irani, Tiwari, Kamal Kapoor, Tuntun, Manorama, Madhumati, Haroon, and Pran. Agha, Mukri, Jr. Mehmood, Polson, Shaikh, B.B. Bhalla, Raj Kishore, Khairati, Murad appear as Guest Artistes in this movie.

This movie was written by I.S. Johar who also wrote the screenplay and dialogues for this movie. Vithal Bankar was the editor for this movie.

Music for this movie was composed by Kalyanji Anandji who were assisted by Babla and where Parte was the arranger and Frank Fernand the Conductor.
There were Six songs in this movie penned by Qamar Jalalabadi (four songs) and two songs are jointly credited to Qamar Jalalabadi and Indeevar (as per HFGK).

Asha Bhonsle, Mohd Rafi, Mukesh, Shamshad Begam, Manna Dey and Usha Timothi gave their voices to the songs in this movie.
As per HFGK Lakshmi Shankar, Usha Khanna and Usha Mangeshkar’s voice has been in one song each, however their names are not mentioned in the titles of this movie (available on YT).

This movie was passed by Censor Board on 04.01.1971.

So far two songs from this movie have been posted on the blog. Today’s song is the third song from this movie to appear on the blog.

Today’s song happens during the ‘Navratri Celebrations’ which all ‘Hindustanis’ living in Hong Kong celebrate every year and send the ‘Garba matka’ to India. Our heroes Mahesh and Ramesh (readers can easily guess who is Mahesh and who is Ramesh) who successfully flee away from jail with other accomplices after giving ‘Jamal ghota’ to Kamal Kapoor, Pran & Co and reach Murad (who is head of the Indian Embassy in the movie I guess) with the ‘secret formula’. Murad advices them that the formula can be easily sent to India in this ‘matka’.

‘Ambe maiyya’ ab hamaari aur hamaare desh ki raksha tere haath hai, desh ke drohi e pujaariyon ko Bharat bhejne se pehle hi khatm kar dena chahte hai, magar Ambe maiyya agar Ramesh aur Mahesh khatm ho jaayen to tu apni chhah bhujaaon se chhah Ramesh aur Mahesh paida kar ke desh ke drohiyon ko chakkar mein daal dena.
Jai Ho …

That is what Ramesh praises to Ambe Maa before the song …

And that is why we have this patriotic garba and seeking the blessings of the goddess to save the mother land and our country …

The movie ends with this song on a happy note where the enemies die their own death and our heroes board the flight for India dancing and enjoying with the ‘secret formula’ in the ‘Garba Pot’.

From today the auspicious festival starts all over India.In Gujarat especially the excitement and preparations for the festival had already begun much earlier when I was there. The ‘garba and dandia’ bhajans and songs had already started playing on in shops, restaurants and public places where the celebrations were to be held.

I had wiitnessed all that during my brief two weeks stay in Gujarat. I have returned back to my work place as per planning and had to travel on Sunday and reaching my destination on this Monday evening >:)I am missing all that excitement a lot now 🙂

Today’s song is sung by Mohd Rafi and Mukesh. And since it involved Singer Mukesh I thought I should consult our Mahesh ji if I can do write-up with this song and he immediately responded that I can ‘go ahead’, thanks to Mahesh ji.

I also take this opportunity to wishing all a very ‘Happy Navratri Festival’ and may it be peaceful and enjoying for all and may the Goddess blessed us all with her blessings and gives us energy to do good for all and fight the evil within and around us …
